Luxury South Luangwa Safaris

The South Luangwa National Park is one of the most iconic parks in all of Zambia. The park has an established airport which can even accommodate for international arrivals. The town and people of Mfuwe is a very welcoming and friendly one.

Not far from the town itself, is the entrance to the South Luangwa – a park home to an exceptional wildlife population, famed for its big cat sightings including lion and leopard. The park also home a hugenumber of elephants, buffalo, and giraffe, among much more.

Speak to the Expert

Game viewing in the South Luangwa is always a thrill. Although nothing is guaranteed on safari, the sightings are very reliable, and you’ll be able to see animals like elephants, giraffe, hippo, hyena, lion, antelope, and buffalo daily. Early morning and late afternoon game drives also allow you the opportunity to see some of the big cats, that become active at night. Leopards are often seen hunting into the night, and the African wild dogs are also spotted in the park’s vicinity.

Why we love luxury South Luangwa safaris

Gemma

Africa Specialist

While game drives are a great way to see a wealth of animals, the South Laungwa National Park is famed for its walking safaris. Norman Carr – the pioneer of the walking safari – created such a name for himself, the park and the walking safari, that it is an activity that so many people want to do when they arrive, and rightly so.

On foot, you not only get the chance to see the smaller things of the bush – the flora and fauna – but the walking safari in the South Luangwa allows you to see larger wildlife on foot. Accompanied by a professional ranger, a walking safari is usually done first thing in the morning, before temperatures get too hot. Enjoy a few hours out in the bush, taking in all the beautiful details and diversity of the South Luangwa National Park.

When to visit the South Luangwa

The best time to visit the South Luangwa National Park is between the June and October window, when the park is dry and accessible. Some camps are open year-round, but their game drives will be limited to areas because of the inaccessibility of the black cotton soil. Because of a shorter seasonality in the South Luangwa National Park, it is advisable to book in advance. September is a great time to visit the national park, as the park is drier, and the animals can be found reliably around the permanent water sources

Your South Luangwa questions answered

What safari activities can I do in the South Luangwa?

The main safari activity in the South Luangwa National Park is game drives. This is the best way to cover ground in the park, as well as get a varied game-viewing experience. Your day will be split into two game drives – one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. Both game drives last around 4-5 hours, and there are plenty of stops along the way for coffee, tea, snacks and of course, sundowner drinks. The other activity that you can do – and that the South Luangwa is famed for – is a walking safari. This is a safari on foot, accompanied and led by professional guides and rangers. The walk is often a couple of hours, done early morning or late afternoon when the temperature is cooler. When you arrive in  your safari camp, your host and guide will talk you through these different safari activities, and schedule your time there.

How long should I spend in the South Luangwa?

The game-viewing in the South Luangwa National Park is truly incredible, so we’d recommend a minimum of at least 3-4 nights on safari here to enjoy the full experience. Some safari camps have sister properties in different areas of the park, so a nice way to extend your time in the South Luangwa National Park is to combine different camps and locations. This will give you a nice mix of game-viewing opportunities, as well as a new camp to enjoy and wonderful guides and staff to meet.

Where should I stay in the South Luangwa?

There are plenty of fantastic safari camps inside the South Luangwa National Park, in which myself and our specialists have traveled to regularly. We always recommend staying inside the park (rather than outside the park boundaries), as this really does excel your safari experience as you will see wildlife the second you drive out of the camp – or sometimes, inside the camp boundaries! There are many safari camps in the park, from the Remote Africa portfolio in the very north, to the Bushcamp Company portfolio in the very south. These vary on experience, camp design and amenities, and in turn, budget. Get in touch to find out which camps and lodges we recommend for you.
