Luxury Lower Zambezi Safaris

The Lower Zambezi National Park is truly one of the rawest safari destinations in all of Africa. With only a handful of safari camps inside the park’s boundaries, a game drive here can often feel entirely exclusive, like you have the park to yourself.

The Lower Zambezi spans over 4,000 square kilometers and although it has so many different landscapes, flora and fauna, the Zambezi River is the focus of the park.

Speak to the Expert

A safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park offers something for everyone. Whereas a lot of national reserves are limited to game drives only, this park offers walking safaris, boat safaris, canoe safaris, night drives, and catch-and-release tiger fishing. There is also an opportunity to do sleepouts which some lodges offer. You’ll be guided to a remote spot, where you can spend the night under the stars.

Why we love luxury Lower Zambezi safaris

The mighty Zambezi River runs through the park, creating a dense, lush environment on both the Zambian and Zimbabwean Side. Both parks share the same ecosystem, with thick winter-thorn forests, open plains and waterways of channels and connecting lakes. The Zambian side is named the Lower Zambezi National Park, and the Zimbabwean side is named Mana Pools National Park.

The Lower Zambezi National Park warrants its own safari, but for those that want to combine it with another safari destination, then the South Luangwa National Park to the north. This way, you’ll be able to see a variety of wildlife including elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard, hyena, hippo, crocodile, and quite often, the African Wild dog.

When to visit the Lower Zambezi

A Zambian safari is one of the more seasonal destinations. The best time to visit the Lower Zambezi National Park is between June and October. While some of the camps remain open year-round, the park becomes inaccessible when the rains arrive in November. The heavy rains churn up the black cotton soil, which makes it impossible for the landcruisers to drive through the park without getting stuck.

The game-viewing throughout the months of June and October is exceptional in the Lower Zambezi, but the later in the season, the hotter the temperature, and the drier the park becomes. This in turn means that animals congregate more around the permanent water sources, with predators often found nearby. October is much hotter, and some safari camps do not offer air-conditioning. Before the rains arrive in November, the temperature becomes extremely hot and humid in November, so we would suggest avoiding this month.

Your Lower Zambezi questions answered

Which Lower Zambezi safari lodge should I stay in?

The Lower Zambezi National Park only has a handful of safari camps and lodges inside the park’s boundaries, which in turn means there are fewer vehicles to see when you are out on a game drive. Most of the luxury tented camps and lodges sit on the banks of the Zambezi River, which provides great views from the main area and rooms – and elephants can often be seen crossing the river. Below are some of our favorite safari cams in the Lower Zambezi, but please be sure to speak to our specialists, to find out which camp they would recommend for you.

What safari activities can I do in the Lower Zambezi National Park?

As the park is located on the Zambezi River, there are many water-based activities that you can do during your stay. Boat safaris are a great way to enjoy the afternoon, as the temperatures are cooler, and you are often relaxed after your lunch and siesta in camp. There is also catch-and-release fishing on the Zambezi, with an accompanied guide who is available to help everyone – from beginners to experienced. Canoe safaris are also offered on the smaller channels of the Zambezi River.

On land, safari camps in the Lower Zambezi offer day and night game drives every day. Some camps offer this on a private basis, while others are on a shared basis (with no more than 6 per vehicle). Walking safaris are also included in your safari package, where you can see the smaller things in the bush, and appreciate the flora and fauna. These safari activities are all included in your inclusive package, and your guide will make a plan and recommend your schedule when you arrive in camp.

What time of year should I visit the Lower Zambezi?

The period of June to October is when you can visit the park, but we would recommend the shoulder months in particular. The end of June is a good time to travel, as it becomes drier after the rains, and the game viewing becomes more reliable. September and early October is also a good time to visit because the predators are congregated around permanent water sources, making it an exciting safari each drive. Mid-late October becomes hotter, and November is extremely hot, so we’d recommend avoiding these times.
