Luxury Victoria Falls Private Tours

Victoria Falls is one of the most incredible waterfalls in the world. The sheer volume of water comes from the streams in the highlands of Zambia and Angola, and each year, this water plummets down an impressive elevation. Victoria Falls is a monumental width of 1,708 meters, and its size covers two countries. Located along the border of both Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is often included in a southern Africa itinerary, and rightly so.

Throughout the year, the water level that tumbles down Victoria Falls differs, so your experience is always unique whatever time of year you travel. As well as tours of Victoria Falls, there are plenty of activities you can do including sunset cruises, microlight flights over the falls, and safari combinations. At certain times of the year, you can enjoy more adrenaline-fueled activities, like white-water rafting and Devil’s Pool.

Why we love luxury tours to Victoria Falls

Zambia and Zimbabwe are proud to home Victoria Falls, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Along with wonders like the Great Barrier Reef, and the Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls is a destination that truly does impress you from the onset. The boarded walkway is a great way to see the falls up close and personal, and during the months where the falls are at their fullest, you will experience the spray and get very wet! Locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, this translates to the Smoke that Thunders which was lovingly named by Livingstone. Today, over a million tourists visit Victoria Falls per year to witness one of the world’s most impressive waterfalls.

When to visit Victoria Falls

If you’re planning a trip to Victoria Falls, you’ll first want to consider the best time to visit. Just after the summer rains, between February and May, is ideal. This is when you’ll see the waterfall at its best, a spectacular sight when the water is at its peak volume, although you won’t be able to enjoy certain activities such as swimming in Devil’s Pool and other areas where there are whitewater rapids as it will be too dangerous. Unfortunately, when Victoria Falls is at its most impressive, popular places nearby for viewing wildlife such as Chobe National Park in Botswana and Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe won’t be at their best for watching the animals.

Aim for May, the start of the peak wildlife-watching season, if you want to marvel at the falls and enjoy a safari. The worst time to visit Victoria Falls is toward the end of the dry season, October and November when the water level will be at its lowest. While it can vary year to year, on the Zambian side, which makes up about a quarter of its width, the falls may be entirely dry with only the bare rock face visible.

Your Victoria Falls questions answered

Can you combine Victoria Falls with a safari?

Yes, absolutely. Victoria Falls can be accessed from the Zambia or Zimbabwean side (as the falls cover both countries), which means that you can combine a safari easily. In Zambia, you can do a safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park or the South Luangwa National Park, and fly across to Victoria Falls after. For Zimbabwe safaris, you can combine destinations like Hwange National Park and Mana Pools. That said, Victoria Falls has two international airports which make it very easy to combine with other safari parks around the continent. We often combine a South Africa safari with Victoria Falls, or even an East Africa safari with Victoria Falls also works well. Get in touch and we can combine your bucket-list destinations!

What can I do at Victoria Falls?

There is so much to do in Victoria Falls, so we usually recommend 2-3 nights to spend here. Of course, a tour and visit of the actual Falls cannot be missed, and this is often an activity that takes most of the morning. There are also hiking trails and walks you can do around this area with a guide. For those looking for more of an adrenaline rush during your time at Victoria Falls, activities like bungee jumping, micro-light flights over the falls, white water rafting and zip-lining are available to book before your trip. The towns are also worth spending some time in (Livingstone and Victoria Falls town), where there are plenty of great restaurants and unique dining experiences to enjoy.

Where should I stay in Victoria Falls?

There are plenty of accommodation options in Victoria Falls, both close to the falls themselves, and further out too. If you are spending one or two nights at Victoria Falls, I’d recommend being closer to the towns for both ease of travel and combining activities. If you are spending longer at the falls, then you can base yourselves further out, in a luxury lodge or camp based on a private reserve, which would give you a different perspective entirely.
