Beach Options in North and East Bali

The north and east of Bali feel like a completely different island to the busy south.

While the south’s best beaches – Nusa Dua, Jimbaran Bay, Seminyak, and Kuta beaches – are popular and well-maintained, the north and east offer a wilder and more authentic slice of Balinese life.

Underwater treasures, attractive villages, breathtaking temples are all just as much of a feature, but there are also far fewer other tourists around to share them with.

Here’s our guide to the best areas in the north and east of Bali in which to base yourself.

Pemuteran

Starting up on the northwest coast, the peaceful coastal village of Pemuteran is one of our favorite all-around beaches in Bali. Its attractive black sand strip is home to a fine selection of upmarket hotels and villas, as well as a few shops and inviting local restaurants.

Development here is in that ‘just right’ area: there are water sports, diving trips, and a handful of local attractions, but the beach is not overly busy. With the West Bali National Park located just a 10-minute drive to the west, it’s also a fine base or jumping-off point for explorations within the park or out to Menjangan.

Menjangan

Sitting wholly within the West Bali National Park (Bali Barat) reserve, Menjangan island serves us some of Bali best’s underwater experiences. Along with Nusa Penida off the east coast, it offers arguably the best snorkeling and diving day trips on the Island of Gods.

Sitting within a natural shelter, the water is clear, calm, and warm – ideal for year-round visits. The rich, colorful coral is home to turtles, reef sharks, rays, nudibranchs, and shrimp. A small selection of upmarket accommodation is available within the park, or you may stay in Pemuteran as above.

Lovina

At the extreme north of the island is the small city of Singaraja, and on its western outskirts is the beach resort of Lovina.

Lovina’s flat, soft sand is, like Pemuteran, an attractive volcanic black. It’s reasonably well-developed and especially popular with villa rentals and ex-pats. A unique highlight are boat trips out to spot bottle-nosed dolphins which swarm just off-shore.

Head inland from Lovina and you’ll quickly be amongst paradisical scenery of rice fields and dramatic waterfalls – ideal for day hikes and cultural activities.

Amed

Over on the northeastern coast are the striking black sand beaches of Amed. Set in the shadow of Mount Agung, the area offers outstanding diving and snorkeling, and immediate access to inland adventures of hiking, rafting, and biking. The sleepy fishing villages are yet to over-develop providing a stark contrast to the over-touristed south.

Amed’s calm and clear waters make for good conditions for divers and snorkelers of all abilities. The near-perfect sheltered cove of Jemeluk Bay is ideal for beginner snorkellers, with enthralling macro life found on the coral reefs immediately out front of your resort.

Candi Dasa

Over on the southeast corner of the island, Candi Dasa refers to a wide area of coast with lots of attraction. At the far east is the beautiful stretch of white sand beach Pasir Putih – one of the best hidden beaches on the island.

At the extreme south, you’ll find the famous ‘Blue Lagoon’ – a sheltered, coral-rich cove which is heaven for beginner snorkelers – and just walking distance away is Padang Bai, from where high-speed ferries depart for Lombok and the Gili Islands.
