A dream honeymoon for any newlywed couple, with everything from enchanting islands and idyllic beaches to fascinating ancient ruins and mouthwatering cuisine, Greece offers it all.  While there are countless destinations to choose from, there’s no need to pick just one – you might mix it up by exploring the centuries-old landmarks and taking a food walking tour in Athens before embarking on an island-hopping cruise to the classics along with hidden gems with secluded beaches for alone time together. Stroll hand-in-hand through cobbled streets lined with whitewashed buildings draped in bougainvillea, toast to a magical sunset while sailing the Aegean, learn to make an authentic Greek meal, and perhaps talk to the winemaker while tasting and touring a family-run winery.

Where to Go in Greece

  • Athens

The heart of the Greek capital will bring you back in time to the 5th century BC although the rest of the city is distinctly 21st-century, which means you can enjoy the perfect mix of ancient and modern here. Discover landmarks most people only see on screen or in a history book, including the crown jewel of Acropolis hill, the Parthenon. No matter where you are in this city, it’s probably looming above, viewed from countless rooftop bars and restaurants to add to your dining pleasure. Of course, the food is a special treat, enjoyed everywhere from sidewalk cafes to markets and fine dining restaurants.

  • Mykonos

A cosmopolitan getaway, Mykonos is a great pick for those who want to enjoy high-end shopping, world-class dining, hopping nightlife, ultra-luxe resorts, and beaches with white powdery sands. You’ll find plenty of activities to take part in, including sunbathing, swimming, Jeep tours, hiking, biking, and sailing. There are iconic sights too, including whitewashed architecture and the early 16th-century windmills in Little Venice that make for a postcard-perfect photo-op. One of the most romantic places on the island, the Venetian-style buildings along the waterfront feature sweeping arches and colorful facades. This is also a top spot for taking in a sunset.

  • Santorini

One of the world’s top destinations for a honeymoon, Santorini caters to romance seekers in many ways. It’s renowned for its very upscale sea-view resorts, many of which are tucked along the caldera cliffs. Beaches run the gamut from unique fiery red to black velvet stretches and there are even natural hot springs to soak in. Explore life back in 1600 BC with a visit to Akrotiri and its remarkably preserved ruins, enjoy wine touring and tasting, and sunset sails around the shoreline. There are many outstanding restaurants for romantic meals while gazing out at the Aegean throughout the island too.

  • Crete

The largest and one of the most diverse of the Greek islands, Crete is ideal for those who want to enjoy a little of everything Greece has to offer. Spend time on pink sand beaches framed by crystal-clear turquoise water, hike rugged canyons and mountains, get lost among the winding backroads that lead to vineyards and wineries, and explore the remains of the first European civilization at the Minoan Knossos Palace. The Old Town of Chania is especially alluring as a romantic destination with its beautiful Venetian port and you’ll find delicious authentic fare throughout the island everywhere from family-run tavernas to modern restaurants.

When to Visit Greece

A honeymoon in Greece can be enjoyed in any season, but to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor scenery, including time spent on secluded beaches together, visiting between April and October is likely to be most enjoyable. For the warmest temperatures, go in July or August, but if you prefer fewer crowds and aren’t into beach parties while wanting to enjoy time in crystal-clear blue waters, consider late May through mid-June or September/early October. Temperatures are typically quite pleasant for sightseeing during these periods as well, although you’ll still want to arrive early in the morning at popular attractions to avoid long lines.
