Spectacular Santorini Sunsets
Taking in one of Santorini’s famously glorious sunsets is a must while on this enchanting Cycladic island. One of the top spots for watching is from Oia village perched atop the rocky caldera at the northern tip of the island, where the sun splashes glorious color across the Aegean as it dips below the horizon and crowds break into applause with appreciation.
Discover Athens’ Acropolis
Located on a rocky outcrop above the Greek capital, the Acropolis is not only the crown jewel of Athenian civilization, it’s widely regarded as having given birth to western civilization as a whole. In addition to its stunning combination of vibrant greenery and brilliant blues you’ll find, monk seals, ancient monasteries, and multiple archaeological sites.
Discover Greece's Original Capital
One of the most romantic places in Greece, Nafplio was the first capital of the new Modern Greek state from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. It’s home to a spectacular Venetian fort and a picturesque Old Town with narrow alleyways laced with bougainvillea, neoclassical mansion, and outstanding museums along with upscale boutiques and enticing cafes.
Explore Low Key Folegandros
Folegandros has been called the “new” Santorini, but for now, visitors can still enjoy an island largely untouched by tourism, home to one of the loveliest towns in the entire country. Chora is a stunning clifftop city, a tranquil place to stroll with no motorized vehicles permitted, enjoying views of the whitewashed cubic homes and blue church domes spilling down the cliffs.
Trace the Olympic Flame
The Peloponnese Peninsula, linked by a bridge to the mainland, is home to soaring mountains, vast rugged gorges, and Olympia, the site of the very first Olympic Games, birthed to honor the god Zeus. They were held here for at least 1,000 years, and to this day, the Olympic flame is still lit for the modern games in the Temple of Hera.
Let your Hair Down in Mykonos
Cosmopolitan Mykonos is famous as the quintessential party island, attracting international jet setters and A-list celebrities. It’s home to luxury resorts with infinity pools overlooking the Aegean, upscale boutiques, lively beach clubs, and postcard-perfect Chora views. An ideal island for a 4X4 tour, getting out and exploring it’s possible to discover its quieter side, including traditional settlements and ancient ruins.
Visit Ancient Delos
A short boat trip from Mykonos, Delos is a tiny abandoned island and the birthplace of Apollo. Once the center of the Delian League and a religious sanctuary, today the entire island is a UNESCO-listed archaeological site where visitors can explore ruins of an amphitheater, houses with mosaics, Doric temples, and markets, and the iconic Terrace of the Lions statues.
Explore UNESCO Meteora
Set high atop rocky outcrops rising more than 1,200 feet above the villages of Kastraki and Kalambaka, Meteora is one of the largest and most spectacular pilgrimage sites in Greece. It’s the home of 14th-century monasteries built by monks, and today, six are open to the public. Reaching them requires a trek along the same paths the monks have used for centuries.
Get Lost in Medieval Rhodes
Rhodes Town is the world’s oldest still populated medieval town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent Venetian architecture, the gothic Palace of the Grand Master, impressive mosques, churches, and more, all surrounded by a moat and fortifications. Discover hidden alleyways, and picturesque squares and stroll the Street of Knights, to marvel at some of the most remarkable medieval relics in the world.
Visit the Lush Ionian Islands
The Ionian islands, just west of the Greek mainland, are the greenest in the country. Kefalonia offers wild horses, and breathtaking chalk-white beaches edged by a calm cobalt sea, while Zante is famous for its “Shipwreck Beach,” showcased in viral Internet images, postcards, and ads. On Corfu discover a picturesque Old Town, mountains to climb, and sandy beaches to relax on.
Escape to Hydra
An ideal place to immerse yourself in another time, Hydra boasts a laid-back atmosphere and quiet cobbled streets lined with magnificent mansions, many of which now serve as museums. Stop to relax in one of the peaceful squares watching the world go by while listening to the clip-clop of donkey hooves and enjoy the pebbly beaches surrounded by lush greenery.
Visit the Oracle
Delphi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the seat of the country’s most significant temple, the oracle of Apollo. Revered as the center of the Earth, today the Delphic sanctuary is home to one of the world’s highest concentrations of ancient ruins, providing visitors with a fascinating glimpse into ancient history as well as plenty of awe-inspiring natural beauty.
