The “Paris of the East,” as Budapest is often referred to, is a thriving capital famous for its thermal baths and numerous cultural attractions. A dual city, it’s made up of the twin cities of Buda which lies on the west side of the Danube River, and Pest on the east. While they became one in 1873, traditionally Buda is the more tranquil of the two halves, with Pest more lively, although both are magnificent. Architectural enthusiasts will find plenty with spectacular Baroque, and Art Nouveau examples across the city. Don’t miss a visit to 13th-century Buda Castle or soaking in one of the soothing thermal pools, the perfect way to relax at the end of the day. Be sure to explore the city’s more recent past too, a visit to see the old communist statues in Memento Park is a must for anyone interested in 20th-century history.

Located in northern Hungary, Eger is relatively unknown, but it offers a fascinating history and alluring sights. You won’t encounter tourist crowds here, making it ideal to wander the tranquil streets lined with Baroque buildings while experiencing the local daily life. It’s overlooked by Eger Castle, the most important castle in Hungary, dating back to the 13th century. Every stone tells the stories of its past, most notably the unwavering spirit of the Hungarians who dared to defy an empire. The fortified stronghold is particularly known for repelling the Turkish attack during the 1552 Siege of Eger in which only a few soldiers were defenders. It was mostly the women and peasants of Eger who managed to defend their grounds against an army of 35,000 heavily armed attackers. In addition to the castle, don’t miss browsing the colorful produce market, rambling along the castle ramparts, and unwinding on the square while people-watching.
