There is no shortage of attractions to visit when it comes to Rome. The monumental ruins of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum are amongst the most photographed, and often regarded the icon of Rome. A construction with almost 2,000 years of history, the Colosseum was once the grandest amphitheater, where over 50,000 people enjoyed spectacles – from colorful performances to more sinister executions and gladiator fights.

The Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel is also among one of the most visited attractions. The chapel was restored in 1480 and became a timeless masterpiece after Michelangelo painted it over a four-year period (1508-1512), just after the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica in 1506. Surprising to some, the Vatican – which is home to the Pope – is a separate state, so technically you’ll be able to tick off another country during your Italy visit.

While still centuries old, landmarks like the Spanish steps, the Trevi Foundation, the Piazza Navona are some of the newer attractions to visit during your trip to Rome. Visit the iconic Colosseum
Regarded as the main symbol of Rome, the Colosseum is an impressive piece of construction with over 2,000 years of history behind it. The Colosseum was built under the empire of the Vespasian, and after its impressive construction, it was used as an amphitheater for entertainment, where almost 50,000 people gathered. The incredible Colosseum is most commonly known for holding fights among gladiators. These fighters were often prisoners of war, made to fight one another in a gruesome battle. Over 2,000 gladiators lost their lives under the reign of emperor Titus.
Appreciate the Pantheon
Arguably one of the most popular sites to visit during your stay in Rome, the Pantheon is an incredible monument and because of its excellent preservation, it has been imitated in other architectural works across the world. In the words of Michelangelo, the Pantheon was not work done by men, but instead, by angels. When it was originally built, between the 25 and 27 B.C, it was a small temple dedicated to the Gods. Today, it is still appreciated as a place of worship, and thousands visit to see the spectacular dome – which is still today’s biggest dome ever built.
Wander the Roman Forum
You cannot visit Rome without visiting the Roman Forum, also known as the Forum Romanum in Latin. This expansive area holds religious, political and historical importance. In 500 B.C., it was believed that local people started gathering in open-air spaces here socially. With beautifully impressive monuments, temples and buildings surrounding them, it would have been quite a spectacular area to gather. Over time, the area served as a battlefield for gladiators (before the Colosseum), a marketplace, and a space for public speeches and elections.
Explore the Vatican City
Although located in Rome, the Vatican is actually its own state, and the smallest in Europe at that. Approximately 1,000 people live inside the state of the Vatican, and over 4 million tourists visit every year. Inside the Vatican, you will have access to a number of attractions which are on most people’s bucket list for Rome. These include St. Peter’s Square (also known as the Piazza San Pietro), St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel – the most visited of all. For those interested in art, the Sistine Chapel is definitely worth queuing for as it was designed and painted by Michelangelo.
Trevi Fountain
Although it is arguably one of the most crowded sites in Rome, the Trevi Fountain is a work of it. Located in the Tridente district of Rome, the Trevi Fountain is often an attraction that you end up ‘stumbling across’. At a height of 26 meters and 20 in width, the Trevi Fountain is the largest in Rome and, although subjective, regarded as the most beautiful. You will often see people throwing coins into the fountain, with a second visit to Rome, love, and marriage on the cards.

Rome has 21 districts, each offering a different experience and ambiance of the city. Some of the most popular districts to stay and visit are Tridente, Monti, Trastevere, Centro Storico, and Campo Marzio. The Tridente region is where you can find iconic sites like the Spanish Steps, the Piazza di Spagna area, and the Trevi Fountain. This area is always busy, no matter what time of day you go, but it is certainly a must-do during your time in Rome. It is also home to the Via Condotti which is the most fashionable street in the capital, featuring high fashion boutiques and luxury brands.

Another popular area in Rome is Monti. This area in the city center is eclectic – a wonderful blend of both classical architecture and archaeological sites, and a bohemian and artistic feel. This is also one of the closest areas to the Forum Romanum and the iconic Colosseum. Trastevere is a neighborhood in Rome that is becoming increasingly popular. It is most famous for its food and wine scene, with plenty of innovative Al Fresco dining spots and pubs serving craft beers.

Centro Storico and Campo Marzio are also very popular districts in Rome. The first, Centro Storico, was the first urban zone in Rome and as a result, is very central to the capital city. Wander the cobbled streets of Centro Storico and immerse yourself in the culture, history, and beautiful ancient architecture – with Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori in particular. Campo Marzio is an exclusive district in Rome, featuring exclusive hotels where you will often see celebrities stay. It is close to Piazza del Popolo, and beside the Villa Borghese gardens in Rome – often nicknamed the ‘green lung’ of Rome.

When to visit Rome

There is so much to see and do in Italy’s capital Rome so arguably a visit year-round is enjoyable, filled with cultural gems, guided tours, and delicious cuisine. That said, the best time to travel is the summer months between April and October. Some excursions or attractions outside of this period may be closed because it is out of season. The best time to visit Rome is early or late summer. April and May offer warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The months of September and October are excellent times to visit Rome as temperatures are pleasant and the city is quieter than the peak summer months of July and August.
