The Piazza del Duomo in Florence is a UNESO World Heritage Site, and often a central point during a Florence walking tour. This is the ‘Cathedral Square’ of the city, and the heart of the historic center. As you wander through the charming streets of Florence, you’re bound to stumble across the Piazza del Duomo – an area that is home to four architectural masterpieces: the cathedral, the baptistry, the cemetery, and the campanile.

Not only are these architectural landmarks unique in their own way, but collectively it was the start of a new type of architecture – named “Pisan Romanesque”. This style is characterized by its basilical churches and impressive facades. Florence is loved by so many because of its ancient architecture and monuments rich in history and culture. Just from walking the streets, you can imagine what life was like centuries ago. Today, enjoy the slower pace and take time to dine in an Al Fresco cafe, or enjoy an Italian coffee or wine under the glistening sun.

What to do in Florence

Explore Florence’s cultural treasures, including the Uffizi Gallery and Florence Cathedral, while strolling along its historic streets and enjoying authentic Italian cuisine.

  • Wander through the Piazza del Duomo

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Piazza del Duomo is one of the most visited, and central spots in the city of Florence. It’s often referred to as the ‘Cathedral Square’, and it’s home to four iconic architectural monuments. These include the cathedral, the baptistry, the cemetery, and the campanile – also known as the Leaning Tower. Whether you are wandering through the charming streets of Florence, or have an organized walking tour, the Piazza del Duomo square deserves a good amount of time.

  • Accademia Gallery

The Accademia Gallery in Florence is home to an impressive collection of sculptures by one of the world’s greatest artists – Michelangelo. During the Renaissance period, Michelangelo sculpted many pieces which are featured on many art enthusiasts’ bucket list. Arugably the most famous is the ‘David’ which was made from marble by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. Enjoy a few hours in this wonderful gallery, taking in the most iconic pieces in Italy.

  • Uffizi Gallery

Constructed between 1560 and 1580, the Uffizi Gallery is located in Florence and definitely deserves a visit during your time in this city. The building itself is beautifully impressive – a real statement of size, structure and historic design designed by Giorgio Vasari. Step inside and you’ll be presented with an outstanding collection of artwork – from sculptures to paintings, which can date back to the Middle Ages.

  • Winery visit to Tuscany

One of the great things about Florence is its location and access to the greater Tuscan region. Characterized by rolling hills and beautiful meadows, this makes for a fantastic day trip. The region is also famous for its wine production. Both white and red grapes are grown in Tuscany, and a visit to a local winery is a must-do. Get in touch with our experts to find out which wineraries they recommend.

  • Visit to Pisa

Florence, Tuscany and Pisa are all very close to each other so combining a visit to them all in a tour is a great way to experience new destinations, cities and landscapes. Home to Gothic churches, Renaissance architecture and of course, the famous Leaning Tower, Pisa is certainly worth visiting for the day, and we can organize a private walking or historic tour to suit your needs and interests.

When to go Florence

Like much of Italy, Pisa offers plentiful sunshine and warm weather between April and September. The city tends to get much busier – and arguably quite crowded – in the peak summer months of July and August, so we would recommend during the months before and after this. These spring and late summer months are ideal for enjoying the Italian city at a slower pace as the streets are filled with Al Fresco dining, art festivals and painters.
