What to do in the Amalfi Coast

Discover the breathtaking Amalfi Coast by hiking its scenic trails, lounging on pristine beaches, and savoring fresh seafood in charming coastal villages.

Hike the Path of the Gods
The soaring cliffs of the Amalfi Coast offer up numerous excellent hikes, but none better than the epic Sentiero Degli Dei – Path of the Gods. Starting from the picturesque village of Bomaberano, the path runs at around 8km / 5mi to Nocelle, along the way passing through gorgeous villages, ancient ruins, and gasp-inducing viewpoints. The hike makes for a memorable day trip from Positano, with the complete route taking between 3 and 5 hours depending on your pace. Light lunches can be taken at cafes tucked into scenic points along the way, or you could plan the trip around a memorable sunrise or sunset.
Visit Italy’s only fjord
Furore, roughly halfway between Positano and Amalfi, has much to offer visitors. The Fiordo di Furore, Italy’s only fjord, is carved out of sheer rock and can be reached by steep staircases down from the historic town. A gorgeous arc bridge carrying the Amalfi – Positano highway passes over the fjord as it opens out to sea, behind which is one of Italy’s finest pebble beaches. All of this backed by sparkling turquoise waters – making some of the finest photography in the region. The beach can be easily reached by boat hire, taxi, or bus from Positano or Amalfi.
A glamorous day trip to Capri
It’s hard to overstate the striking beauty of the Cinque Terre towns, five small fishing villages – and former pirate coves – dotted along the Italian Riviera. From north to south the towns are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, each of which tumbles down from the sheer cliff face, featuring impossibly steep alleys, panoramic terraces, colorful fishing harbors, and inviting trattorias serving up the finest specialties of Liguria. The towns are encompassed by the wider Cinque Terre National Park and are linked by a series of cliffside hiking trails – the views are quite incredible – and house some of Italy’s finest beaches.
Walk the Villa gardens of Ravello
Ravello, just east of Amalfi town, is another wonderful half or full-day trip. The resort town is positioned atop a cliff high above the Tyrrhenian Sea and is home to not one but two beautiful and highly renowned villa gardens. The Terrace of Infinity, located within the luxurious rose gardens of Villa Cimbrone, offers up arguably the Amalfi Coast’s finest sunset viewpoint. Back in the center of town, the equally gorgeous Villa Rufolo dates back to the 13th century and offers a series of airy courtyards, flower displays, and more jaw-dropping vistas.
Explore Amalfi Town
Amalfi town is somewhat overshadowed by the leading lights of the Amalfi Coast – Sorrento, Ravello, and Positano – but is well worth a visit, with much to reward the casual visitor. Built between the 9th and 11th centuries, the town has a wonderful mix of candy-colored Roman, Norman, and Arab architecture, with its Byzantine Sant’Andrea cathedral dominating the center of town. Walk the graceful streets down to shipyard-turned-exhibition space Museo Arsenale, or enjoy the town’s excellent shopping and Neopolitan dining options. Your day can be capped off with a memorable sunset journey back along the Amalfi Drive, with the sun dipping below the horizon out to sea.

When to visit the Amalfi Coast

As with the rest of Italy and the wider Mediterranean, the best time to visit Italy are the warmer months between April and October. However, as one of Italy’s leading tourist destinations, the tight lanes and thin beaches of Amalfi’s historic towns are especially busy during the peak summer months of July and August. With temperatures hitting a peak of 65-80F during this time too, it’s a time of year to avoid if at all possible. Instead, we advise traveling around the shoulder months of April, May, the early weeks of June, and then later in the year in September and early October. During these months you’ll typically find dry, clear days with temperatures hovering around 50-75F, and a much more pleasant touring experience with fewer other tourists around.
