Visit Milan Cathedral
Milan Cathedral, or the Duomo, is located at Piazza del Duomo. The gothic-style building took over 600 years to complete, with construction starting in 1386. There are beautiful stained-glass windows and inside you’ll see a wide range of impressive works of art. A museum on-site features wooden models, tapestries, statues, and other items, many of which were materials used to build the cathedral. Head to the roof for an awe-inspiring view of the Alps through the marble spires and pinnacles of the cathedral.
See The Last Supper
One of the top visitor attractions in Milan is The Last Supper, displayed in the refectory of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. A massive masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci, it’s one of the most famous paintings in the world. While there have been many reproductions, this is the only one that truly captures the emotions of shock and anguish on the faces of the disciples who learned that one would betray Jesus.
Visit Castello Sforzesco
One of the city’s iconic landmarks, Castello Sforzesco is located in Sempione Park (Parco Sempione) and was one of the largest citadels in Europe. Many notable figures left their mark here, including world-renowned artists like Leonardo da Vinci who worked here during the late 15th century. His famous wall painting in the Sala delle Asse opened on the 500th anniversary of his death in 2019. Today, the imposing medieval complex is home to a half-dozen of Milan’s museums and art collections.
Go to the Opera at Teatro alla Scalla
A world-famous opera house, Teatro alla Scalla was founded in the late 18th century. As one of the most celebrated opera houses, seats sell out quickly but if you can score one, catching a performance is sure to be a highlight of your time in Milan. It’s also possible to book seats for a recital or you can take a guided tour to see the elegant crimson and gold interior, including the royal box, auditorium, and stage.
Shop at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Going to a shopping mall may not sound like a must-do on your vacation, but Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is no ordinary mall. Constructed in 1877, it’s one of the world’s oldest and most opulent, housing many high-end designer stores, including Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Versace. There are even fine dining restaurants here, some helmed by celebrity chefs. You’ll find an iconic bookstore here too, Libreria Bocca, here since 1930 with a presence in Milan long before.
Take a Trip to Lake Como
When visiting Milan you’ll be perfectly situated for a day trip to Lake Como, the most famous of the Italian lakes. It’s easily reached in less than 50 minutes with direct trains running to both the towns of Varenna and Como, the main town along the lake’s shores, hosting historic sites, shops, bars, and more. Cruises are available allowing visitors to take in the sights by water and in the summer, there are idyllic beaches for sunbathing and swimming.

When to go to Milan

Milan is a year-round destination, with the only month to avoid widely regarded as August as most Milanese will be taking their vacations and many businesses close, leaving the streets packed with tourists enduring the heat and the humidity. The best time to visit Milan is when the weather is pleasant, not too hot or too cold, in April, May, September, or October. The temperatures will be in the 60s or 70s and while there may be occasional rain, the skies are often clear. If you want to avoid the biggest crowds, skip the summer month, fashion weeks, and around holidays. For those on a tight budget, consider a winter visit, outside of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
