Luxury Positano Tours & Vacations

Gaze out at Positano from the sea and you might think you’ve stepped into a painting. It’s an incredible vertical panorama of color, with the brilliant blue of the sea, the silvery pebble beaches, the yellow, pink, and white homes, and the green of the Monti Lattari. The town sits to the west of the natural terrace on the Tyrrhenian Sea with its winding alleyways and lanes best enjoyed at a leisurely pace to soak up the simple pleasures in life.

They’re lined with many upscale boutiques, shops selling custom-made leather sandals, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants with the historic square hosts a centuries-old church with artifacts and plenty of interesting stories. There are few places that can rival its beauty – it seems as if it was perfectly designed for romance, with a skyline that still looks like it did a century ago, thanks to the strict building codes that ban modern construction.

Luxury Positano Tours

The roughly 35-mile route winds through 13 towns, with the mountains melting down to the water. Sorrento is the unofficial starting point with the town of Amalfi at the end and Positano in the middle.

Positano is the crown jewel of the Amalfi Coast. While it’s a small village, the vision of colorful pastel-painted homes clinging tightly to the cliffside while alleyways laced with bougainvillea wind down to the sea, is one of the most striking on the planet. From here, you’ll also enjoy one of the most jaw-dropping Mediterranean views, with aquamarine waves crashing against the coast. It’s an idyllic base for exploring one of the world’s most famous coastlines, with plenty of chic boutiques, tasty eateries, and accommodation options catering to tourists.

A stay in Positano isn’t about checking landmarks off a list like you might in a big city. It’s more about savoring moments like sipping an Aperol spritz on the beach, sailing the brilliant blue waters, breathing in the aroma of lemons, lingering over a delicious meal, and watching a glorious sunset.

What to do in Positano

Discover the best of Positano, from relaxing on its famous beaches to shopping at its boutique stores.

  • Visit The Church of Santa Maria Assunta

This church is the centerpiece of town, with roots that date back to the 10th century. It was once the Romanesque-style abbey of the Benedictine monastery and faces Piazza dei Mulini. You’ll see its Moorish dome with brightly glazed tiles from the outside, but the most notable feature is inside, the Virgin Madonna that’s been celebrated here for centuries as part of a popular legend that tells the story of how Positano was named. It also includes an altar with 12th-century Byzantine treasures.

  • Relax on Spiaggia Grande

The town’s main beach, a 1,000-foot-long stretch at the base of its colorful terraces, is Spiaggia Grande. During the summer, it’s the place to be with many sunbathers lounging on the sunbeds next to shady umbrellas and another section where visitors relax on towels for free. In between, they often enjoy swimming in the sea that’s warm enough from late May through early October. There are multiple places to dine and drink as well as facilities to rent kayaks or take boat tours.

  • Drive Along the Coastal Highway

No visitor should miss the opportunity to take the world-famous Amalfi Coast drive along the coastal highway. The approximately 35-mile stretch connects 13 different towns bringing countless opportunities for photo-ops with the cliffs and their pastel-painted homes on one side while the azure waves of the sea crash on the other. Roadside stands along the way offer lemons and lemon products like lemon candy for sale, and there are some interesting places to stop like Minori with its Roman ruins.

  • Buy Handmade Leather Sandals

You’ll find lots of opportunities to shop in Positano but one of the most popular items to buy is a pair of handmade Capri Positano leather sandals. Made from high-quality Italian leather, there are many stores that sell them, and they can even be custom-made just for you while you wait, taking as little as an hour. They’re available in a dizzying array of styles and colors, with many proprietors using the same techniques used for generations.

  • Dance at Music on the Rocks

One of the most famous and unique venues for nightlife on the Amalfi Coast, Music on the Rocks is a nightclub that sits under Rada Restaurant, nested in a cliff. It looks like a cave and boasts spectacular views across the sea. After dark, top DJs spin party tunes for dancing the night away. It’s been around for over a half-century, providing one of the coolest after-dark experiences enjoyed among an in-vogue crowd around.

  • Visit Capri

As the island of Capri is a short boat ride away, don’t miss the opportunity for a boat tour that typically includes a visit to the famous Blue Grotto and time to explore on land too. A glamorous getaway for the rich and famous, it attracts many international jet setters and celebrities, with its labyrinth of narrow streets home to many fashion boutiques selling designer apparel and accessories. There are ruins to visit and plenty of eateries too.

When to go to Positano

The best time to visit Positano is May, followed by April and mid-September through early October. May is optimal with idyllic weather with temperatures around the mid-70s. While there will be plenty of tourists here, the big summer crowds have yet to arrive. April is your next best bet as it’s similar, just slightly cooler with a little higher chance of some rain. In the summer, it’s jam-packed with visitors and the roadways are very congested too. The days are hot and often humid, making it feel even hotter, with most enjoyed at the beach. This is the most expensive time to visit and you’ll need to make reservations well in advance, but if you like a party and a lively atmosphere, you’re likely to enjoy it. The crowds thin and the temperatures dip in mid-September, yet the sea will still be warm enough for swimming through at least early October.
