Visit The Church of Santa Maria Assunta
This church is the centerpiece of town, with roots that date back to the 10th century. It was once the Romanesque-style abbey of the Benedictine monastery and faces Piazza dei Mulini. You’ll see its Moorish dome with brightly glazed tiles from the outside, but the most notable feature is inside, the Virgin Madonna that’s been celebrated here for centuries as part of a popular legend that tells the story of how Positano was named. It also includes an altar with 12th-century Byzantine treasures.
Relax on Spiaggia Grande
The town’s main beach, a 1,000-foot-long stretch at the base of its colorful terraces, is Spiaggia Grande. During the summer, it’s the place to be with many sunbathers lounging on the sunbeds next to shady umbrellas and another section where visitors relax on towels for free. In between, they often enjoy swimming in the sea that’s warm enough from late May through early October. There are multiple places to dine and drink as well as facilities to rent kayaks or take boat tours.
Drive Along the Coastal Highway
No visitor should miss the opportunity to take the world-famous Amalfi Coast drive along the coastal highway. The approximately 35-mile stretch connects 13 different towns bringing countless opportunities for photo-ops with the cliffs and their pastel-painted homes on one side while the azure waves of the sea crash on the other. Roadside stands along the way offer lemons and lemon products like lemon candy for sale, and there are some interesting places to stop like Minori with its Roman ruins.

It’s been around for over a half-century, providing one of the coolest after-dark experiences enjoyed among an in-vogue crowd around.
Visit Capri
As the island of Capri is a short boat ride away, don’t miss the opportunity for a boat tour that typically includes a visit to the famous Blue Grotto and time to explore on land too. A glamorous getaway for the rich and famous, it attracts many international jet setters and celebrities, with its labyrinth of narrow streets home to many fashion boutiques selling designer apparel and accessories. There are ruins to visit and plenty of eateries too.

When to go to Positano

The best time to visit Positano is May, followed by April and mid-September through early October. May is optimal with idyllic weather with temperatures around the mid-70s. While there will be plenty of tourists here, the big summer crowds have yet to arrive. April is your next best bet as it’s similar, just slightly cooler with a little higher chance of some rain. In the summer, it’s jam-packed with visitors and the roadways are very congested too. The days are hot and often humid, making it feel even hotter, with most enjoyed at the beach. This is the most expensive time to visit and you’ll need to make reservations well in advance, but if you like a party and a lively atmosphere, you’re likely to enjoy it. The crowds thin and the temperatures dip in mid-September, yet the sea will still be warm enough for swimming through at least early October.
