When to Visit Malta

Malta enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate year-round, with hot, dry summers and cool winters. Spring and fall are often quite pleasant with idyllic temperatures and mostly dry weather. The tourist season is from May through October, but sun worshipers will want to come during the summer, with July and August the peak. The water will be perfect for swimming and the beaches will be filled with people who come to enjoy it. It’s a lively scene with many enjoying the nightlife during balmy evenings. Big festivals can be enjoyed now, with internationally known DJs while jazz, the arts, and a beer festival also attract many after days spent soaking up the sun and the sand.

While the water may be a bit chilly for swimming in the spring, this season is ideal for hiking and sightseeing without the crowds, with temperatures around the mid-70s Fahrenheit, and you might enjoy some discounted room rates as well. Autumn is similar but the sea will have warmed up throughout the summer, making the first half of the season a good time for swimming. Winter is relatively mild with temperatures typically around the upper 50s to the mid-60s, but it can be windy and occasionally wet.

Malta season-by-season

Malta is a destination that can be enjoyed all year round. A seasonal climate overview is provided below.

Spring

During the first half of spring, things are starting to dry and warm up after a cool, wet winter, but it will probably be too chilly for swimming or the beaches in March and April. Around Easter, which sees many elaborate parades, the island will be crowded with visitors. By the time May rolls around, Malta is often idyllic with daytime temperatures around the mid-70s Fahrenheit and visitors can often take advantage of shoulder season rates. May through about mid-June is the sweet spot for few crowds and good weather without being busy due to events or festivals while locals are often in a relaxed mood enjoying the calm before the arrival of the majority of tourists that will soon arrive in the summer.

Summer

Summers are perpetually sunny and can be relentlessly hot with temperatures rising well into the 80s and often much higher. Of course, if you like the beach, it’s the perfect time to come which is why the islands attract so many visitors in July and August. Beaches and resort areas will be crowded while the streets of Valletta are filled with shoppers, diners, and sightseers. August is the most crowded month but if you’re here to enjoy watersports, concerts at the beach, and the capital’s party scene, it will be ideal. Local summer festivals across Malta and Gozo promise plenty of fun, showcasing culture, folklore, food, and music. If you plan to visit Malta in the summer, you’ll want to make your plans well in advance to avoid disappointment and expect to pay some of the highest rates of the year in exchange for a great time.

Fall

With the hot summer sun setting for the season, Malta welcomes fall with a shift from sizzling heat to pleasantly warm days. The crowds start to dissipate, and rates are often lower, yet the water will still be comfortable for swimming and snorkeling through September and likely well into October. There is a slightly greater chance for rain as the season progresses, but most days are still warm and sunny, although nights can be chilly. November is not a good time to come to enjoy your days at the beach but with the crowds clearing out it’s perfect for sightseeing while still enjoying sunny skies. Mid-September through early October is one of our favorite times to visit Malta with fewer crowds, sunbathing on the beaches enjoyable, and the water warm enough for swims.

Winter

Winter tends to be wet, windy, and chilly with temperatures ranging in the 50s and 60s. December is the rainiest month although still light compared to most countries in Europe this time of year. The weather doesn’t dampen spirits here, especially this month, with many lively Christmas celebrations to enjoy. January and February are usually the coldest months, but the mercury is unlikely to dip below 50. It’s a good time to bundle up and enjoy a stroll while taking in the sights.
