When to go to the Netherlands

The best time to visit the Netherlands depends on what you plan to see and do along with other factors such as your budget and tolerance for crowds. Perhaps you want to see the colorful tulips in bloom, cycle along the many canals, or join the street parties celebrating King’s Day. While the crowds are often thick in the capital city during the summer, it is a great time to visit with sunny but not too hot weather, long days, and lively festivals. When the tulip fields are flowering, from late March through May, the region can also be crowded, and rates for accommodation may be as high as they are during the peak summer months. The crowds thin in the fall and the weather is typically mild, at least through around late October. After that, it’s likely to be wet and cold through around mid-March which is the off-season with lower hotel prices and fewer crowds.

The Netherlands season-by-season

We’ve broken down the best time to visit the Netherlands by season providing a better idea of what to expect in each, allowing you to make the best choice for your trip.

Spring

Spring is a great time to visit with pleasant but cool weather including temperatures from mid-50s to the low 60s Fahrenheit (around 12 to 17 Celsius). Some crowds are likely with so many blossoming flowers, especially near Lisse which attracts visitors from across the globe, but it’s ideal for enjoying the outdoors, whether you want to relax by a canal or explore parks like Keukenhof, one of the world’s best with an endless sea of colors, including plenty of tulips. It’s one of the main attractions this time of year with the sight of seven million flowers worth dealing with the crowds for most. This season also hosts several enticing fairs and celebrations, such as King’s Day (Koningsdag), which is celebrated on the 27th April, when the whole country turns into a sea of orange.

Summer

If you want to enjoy the warmest weather of the year, summer is the time to visit the Netherlands. June can be a great time to go as the crowds won’t be as thick as they are in July and August. Temperatures are around the mid to upper 60s, ideal for dining on the outdoor patios along the canal and exploring the city on two wheels or on foot. This is when the country is at its most vibrant and you can enjoy long days, providing more time for sightseeing and outdoor activities. There are lots of events to enjoy during the season including music festivals, pride parades along the canals, cultural events, and flower shows. Of course, as the peak tourist season, it will be busy and accommodation rates will be at their highest of the year. If you come now, it’s a must to book your trip, including airfare and hotels, well in advance.

Fall

September brings mildly warm days in the upper 60s but as the month progresses it will get cooler and the crowds thin once again. It can be a great time to visit the Netherlands for those who want to avoid lines at places like the Anne Frank House and the cost of accommodation and airfare will be lower too. An array of warm autumn hues makes it especially enjoyable to hike and bike through the forests and visit open-air museums like Zaanse Schans, or Hoge Veluwe National Park. Keep an eye out for migratory birds arriving for winter along with other wildlife. As the season progresses it can be a bit chilly and rain becomes more likely, but the pros usually outweigh the cons for most. You’ll enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere as compared to summer and spring and the opportunity for a more budget-friendly trip with accommodation and airfare less expensive.

Winter

The days are getting shorter now and temperatures drop, ranging from around 32 to 44 degrees Fahrenheit (0-7 Celsius) bringing chilly and sometimes windy days often with overcast skies. November won’t be as cold as it is in the heart of winter and it can be a good time to come if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a less expensive trip. When December arrives, you’ll be able to explore the many Christmas markets throughout the country, which also results in an increase in the number of visitors. Be sure to book your accommodation well in advance, especially if you’re planning to come during the second half of the month and into early January. It’s a delightful time to visit, however, with lots of colorful holiday lights, the aroma of mulled wine, and treats like oliebollen donuts. Once the canals freeze, they become ice skating rinks, adding to the magic, but sadly this has become less frequent as global temperatures rise.
