When to go to the Netherlands

If you want to enjoy the warmest weather of the year, summer is the time to visit the Netherlands. June can be a great time to go as the crowds won’t be as thick as they are in July and August. Temperatures are around the mid to upper 60s, ideal for dining on the outdoor patios along the canal and exploring the city on two wheels or on foot. This is when the country is at its most vibrant and you can enjoy long days, providing more time for sightseeing and outdoor activities. There are lots of events to enjoy during the season including music festivals, pride parades along the canals, cultural events, and flower shows. Of course, as the peak tourist season, it will be busy and accommodation rates will be at their highest of the year. If you come now, it’s a must to book your trip, including airfare and hotels, well in advance.

The days are getting shorter now and temperatures drop, ranging from around 32 to 44 degrees Fahrenheit (0-7 Celsius) bringing chilly and sometimes windy days often with overcast skies. November won’t be as cold as it is in the heart of winter and it can be a good time to come if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a less expensive trip. When December arrives, you’ll be able to explore the many Christmas markets throughout the country, which also results in an increase in the number of visitors. Be sure to book your accommodation well in advance, especially if you’re planning to come during the second half of the month and into early January. It’s a delightful time to visit, however, with lots of colorful holiday lights, the aroma of mulled wine, and treats like oliebollen donuts. Once the canals freeze, they become ice skating rinks, adding to the magic, but sadly this has become less frequent as global temperatures rise.
