What to do in Poland

Poland is a large and very diverse country with everything from soaring mountains, turquoise lakes, and rivers, to a beautiful coastline on the Baltic Sea with sandy dunes. In between are many enchanting cities with fascinating history to explore. It also has a rather somber past that can be experienced at Auschwitz, a complex operated by Nazi Germany with more than 40 concentration and extermination camps. A visit here is a journey through history, culture, and nature, with numerous opportunities for outdoor adventure too. And, a tasty Polish brew with a hardy meal is never far away wherever your travels might take you.

Best activities to do in Poland

Poland has a huge range of outdoor pursuits, history, culture, and food to enjoy. To help you narrow it down we have put together a list of some of our favorites.

Explore Krakow Old Town

Krakow’s Old Town is home to a fabulous square at the center that serves as a popular gathering hub and hosts nearly an endless array of museums, shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants, along with multiple historic landmarks. It’s ideal for people-watching and there are almost always many street musicians to entertain the crowds. St. Mary’s Basilica with its imposing Gothic spires has kept watch over the market square for 700 years, and at the top of the 15th-century Town Hall Tower, you can enjoy a spectacular view over the Old Town. Don’t miss the Cloth Hall, a corridor of craft stores and gift shops.

Get Lost in Warsaw’s Old Town

The Old Town in Warsaw is a bustling hub with medieval buildings that were reconstructed after World War II and picturesque cobbled streets. Surrounded by 14th-century walls, it dates back to the 12th century, and at its heart is a lively square, Rnek Starego Miasta, and has been the center of public life since the 13th century. Today, it’s home to upscale eateries, cocktail bars, souvenir shops, and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. The Literature Museum and the Historical Museum of Warsaw are here while the 14th-century St. John’s Cathedral which hosts concerts in the summer is nearby.

Visit Auschwitz

Visiting Auschwitz, albeit a very somber experience, is something that everyone who visits Poland should do. The largest Nazi Germany concentration and extermination camp during the Second World War over 1.3 million people lost their lives here. A visit will bring you to see the barracks where inmates were kept which now feature exhibitions that show the reality of Auschwitz. You’ll see the halls where personal belongings from arriving prisoners were taken such as glasses, shoes, and even some of the victim’s hair as well as learn about some of the cruel practices that took place such as torture and medical experiments.

Discover the depths of the Wieliczka Salt Mines

The Wieliczka Salt Mines is an official national historic monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that transports visitors to a mysterious world of salt beneath the surface of the Earth. A spectacular journey will bring you to see four chapels and dozens of statues that were carved out of rock salt by the miners with new carvings added to the older sculptures by contemporary artists. Located in the town of Wielicka near Krakow, sodium chloride was produced there from the upwelling brine dating all the way back to Neolithic times. They were worked continuously from the 13th through the late 20th century.

Visit two of Europe's best Museums in Gdansk

The Museum of the Second World War and the Solidarity Museum are two of the best in Europe. The WWII Museum features over 2,000 exhibits, and it takes at least three hours to see it all with the main exhibition spread over three narrative blocks: The Road to War, The Terror of War, and The Long Shadow of War. It’s a very detailed account of the events and people involved, from the beginning to the end. The Solidarity Museum will take you back to the early 80’s to see how the shipyard workers fought for freedom for all Poles living under the brutal communist dictatorship.

Hike the Tatra Mountains

Some of Europe’s most beautiful mountains, the Tatras are the only alpine mountain range in the country, forming the border between Poland and Slovakia. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the peaks are spread through both countries, featuring flower-filled meadows, lush valleys, brilliant turquoise lakes, soaring peaks, and miles and miles of scenic trails. There are over 170 located in Tatra National Park bringing the opportunity to discover glorious sights like the spectacular alpine lake called Morskie Oko and the tallest mountain in Poland, Mount Rysy. The park is also rich in flora and fauna with pinewood trees, colorful flowers, marmots, wild cats, bears, and wolves.

Conclusion

Poland has so much to offer you might find yourself planning a return trip before you leave. No matter what your interests, from medieval and World War II history to nature and outdoor adventure, it’s the perfect place for an adventure. Hike the mountains, spend time strolling beaches along the Baltic Sea, and learn more about the country’s past, as well as how it’s affected the entire world. A trip here can be easily customized based on what you want to see and do, or if time allows, come see it all. One thing is sure, Poland won’t disappoint.
