When to go to Poland

Poland isn’t known for its year-round warmth and sunshine, but there is a reason to visit in every season depending on your interests. Summer is hot and often wet with unpredictable and sudden storms possible in between bouts of sunshine. As it’s the high season though, it’s also the busiest time of year. Winters are cold, but you’ll enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere, with endless cozy cafes and bars to warm up in. Spring and fall are the best seasons for sightseeing with mild weather minus the year’s biggest crowds.

With its varied climate, Poland is truly an all-year-round destination. Below is an overview of climate season-by-season.

Spring

Spring is a great alternative to the cold winters and warm, crowded summers although in March the ski season will still be running and temperatures can be rather cool depending on the destination. Temperatures rise in April and in much of the country, it will be relatively dry although the southern region does get more rain. May is one of the best months to visit Poland to avoid tourist crowds and enjoy pleasant temperatures that average in the upper 60s in many areas of the country.

Summer

The weather is unpredictable in the summer with a mix of sun, frequent rain, and the occasional unexpected storm but it’s the best for enjoying a beach getaway on the Baltic coast. The average high temperature in Gdansk and nearby resort areas is 72 degrees, although in recent years it has risen quite a bit higher. Visitors can also enjoy June’s Good Beer Festival in Wroclaw which celebrates international and Polish beers. Be aware that it will be more crowded and accommodation rates will be at their highest of the year.

Autumn / Fall

While autumn starts out similar to summer, warm and wet, late September through mid-October can be the very best time to visit Poland. Temperatures are mild and it’s not as rainy as the spring. The crowds will have thinned so there will be fewer lines at attractions and there’s more availability at hotels and other accommodations. During the second half of October it won’t be as warm but compared to November it will be much more enjoyable for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Plus, the landscapes will be blanketed with brilliant fall colors.

Winter

Winters in Poland can be bitterly cold with frequent snowfall and heavy wind. The average high temperature in January is 28 degrees so if you want to enjoy sightseeing you’ll need to bring your warmest winter gear. But it’s the perfect time to enjoy the more tranquil atmosphere of the historic Old Towns and the cheapest prices of the year for accommodation. Those who come in December will find lots of festive Christmas markets to enjoy which liven up even the coldest of winter days.

While the spring and fall, especially May and late September through mid-October, are ideal times to visit Poland for most travelers, there’s a reason to visit in every season with such diverse experiences available. When the weather turns chilly, enjoy one of the many indoor attractions, including the country’s world-class museums.
