The buildings alone are worth the visit with gothic structures and modern wonders by Gaudi. The architectural treasures span over 2,000 years, with ancient city walls, soaring temple columns, and subterranean stone corridors providing a glimpse into the Roman era. The Middle Ages can be experienced among the Gothic quarter’s shadowy lanes while sculptural masterpieces, a mix of whimsical and ingenious created by Gaudi and architectural Catalan contemporaries, can be found throughout other parts of town.

The sapphire blue of the sea beckons with sun-drenched beaches and opportunities for everything from leisurely seaside strolls and bike rides followed by refreshing dips to fun out on the water while stand-up paddleboarding or on a sunset cruise. A gastronomic feast, whether rich paella enjoyed alfresco overlooking the Mediterranean or fresh seafood in an elegant art nouveau dining room, is sure to end the day on a high note.

What to do in Barcelona

  • Admire the Architecture by Gaudi

One of Barcelona’s biggest draws is its architecture, but of the many magnificent buildings in the city, Antoni Gaudi’s work is a standout. One of the most famous is the gothic- and art-nouveau-style Sagrada Familia. It was started in 1882 and it was never finished, but the part built by Gaudi has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s been called the greatest achievement in Catalan construction with its bright colors, unconventional animal representations, and hyperboloids. Park Guel is another highlight and includes Gaudi’s House, which now serves as a museum containing objects and furniture that were designed by the architect himself.

  • Take a Stroll Along Las Ramblas

Las Ramblas has become an iconic landmark in the city. The wide boulevard that runs through the heart of Barcelona’s center, stretching from Placa de Catalunya Square to Port Vell harbor is a pedestrianized, tree-line promenade. While strtree-linedou’ll see all sorts of street performances from a bicycling skeleton and human statues that are transformed into mythical creatures to musicians, dancers, and mimes. Many enticing cafes and restaurants are hosted here, with terraces for sipping a glass of vino while taking it all in from above. A panoramic view of the street and the city can be enjoyed from the top of Mirador a Colum.

  • Sample the Best Tapas in the Old Fishermen Quarter

While hordes of tourists descend upon the Barceloneta neighborhood, the name for the Old Fishermen Quarter, this area near the sea has managed to remain mostly unspoiled, retaining a distinct Mediterranean character. There are still active fishermen here today and you’ll find many tapas bars as well. In fact, many feel this is the top place to sample tapas, with hidden spots like the family-run La Cova Fumada, often named the very best in Barcelona for tapas. It dates from 1944 and has an authentic local vibe while serving deliciously fresh offerings with a focus on seafood, simply seasoned.

  • Visit the Oldest Market, La Boqueria

The biggest and oldest fresh food market in Barcelona, La Boqueria opened in 1836 in what was once a church patio. Its roots date back to the 13th century with documents revealing meat stalls that were part of a street market here in 1217. It was originally open-air but in 1914 it was covered and made into an indoor market. An emblematic spot in the city on La Ramblas, it’s renowned for its diverse, high-quality products that come from across the globe. Enjoy the atmosphere while strolling the stalls with vibrantly colored fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, and much more.

When to visit Barcelona

Summer is the peak tourist season in Barcelona, the best time to come to enjoy lively festivals. The hot, humid weather also makes it ideal for a beach getaway with lots of time spent in the water which will be comfortably warm through at least mid-September. Avoid the biggest crowds and enjoy pleasant weather by visiting in May or mid-September through early October.
