A beguiling cosmopolitan city pulsing with life, Madrid is a place where the old and new intertwine with large plazas and skyscrapers capping off narrow cobbled lanes and 18th-century squares. It’s a place for art lovers who return again and again, having birthed everyone from Velazquez and Goya to Italian greats while masterpieces by Picasso, Dali, and other Spanish painters adorn the walls of world-class galleries and museums.

While much of the city is modern, at its heart you’ll enjoy a pleasant surprise with medieval buildings and atmospheric alleys with interesting shops and enticing bars. Plenty of fantastic museums await, including Reina Sofa, Thyssen, and El Prado, but it’s fun just to get lost in one historic neighborhood after another, soaking up the warmth of the locals and enjoying the taste of sangria along the way.

What to do in Madrid

  • Explore Prado Museum

The main national art museum in Spain, Museo Nacional del Prado opened in 1819 and contains a wide range of classical masterpieces, with the Spanish royal family collecting and commissioning many works over the years. It includes some of the most impressive European art collections, dating from the 12th century to the early 19th century, including Spanish artists like Ribera, Velazquez, and Goya, along with a vast collection of Flemish and Italian artists. The most famous work is Velazquez’s Las Meninas, with other highlights including Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights triptych, Ruben’s Three Graces, and multiple Goya works like the somber Black Paintings.

  • Watch a Live Flamenco show

Catching a live flamenco performance in Madrid is a must as it’s such a big part of Spanish culture. This is the country’s most famous style of dance and music, known across the globe for its color, beauty, and energy. Many top performers come to this city to show off their skills which means you can find a wide array of exciting experiences here, everywhere from bars and restaurants that host live music and dancing to dedicated flamenco clubs, theaters, and concert halls. Corral de la Moreria offers performances almost daily and is the capital’s oldest venue for flamenco, dating back to 1956.

  • People Watch in Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is the main square which sits in Madrid’s geographic center. It’s one of the best places to start your exploits in the city with its past revealed in scenes displayed on the benches. The highlight here is the Royal Palace which is still used by the royal family occasionally but now serves as a museum. Tours are available to bring you through the opulent interior to view some of the nearly 3,500 rooms like Charles III’s bed chambers and the Hall of the Crown. Lying adjacent is Sabatini Gardens, a serene oasis that also offers a great view of the palace towering above.

  • Cheer on Real Madrid with the Locals at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu (the team’s home stadium)

Estadio Santiago Bernabeu serves as the home stadium for Real Madrid, the city’s football (soccer) team. One of the best things you can do when it comes to authentic local experiences is to attend a game and cheer on the team with the locals. This is the most successful team in Europe and its fans are passionate. Some of the world’s greatest players are part of what’s known as “Los Galacticos,” including Cristiano Ronaldo, an icon in the sport, famous even among non-football fans. Pick up some gear and do what the locals do, you might even make a few new friends.

When to visit Madrid

Renowned for its nightlife, you’ll always find a party in Madrid, with June or July the best time to visit. In August many locals will be on vacation, yet accommodation rates are high with a large number of tourists here. If you’d like to enjoy more reasonable costs and the most pleasant weather for sightseeing without the biggest crowds, consider May or October.
