Luxury Seville Tours & Vacations

Seville, known locally as Sevilla, is the leading light of southern Spain. The country’s fourth-largest city is the cultural and economic capital of southern regions Andalusia and Murcia, known for their lively spirit and passionate locals.

Seville was originally founded by the Romans, later flourishing under Islamic rule from AD 700 onwards. It’s since seen significant populations of Moors, Jews, and Christians, and this eclecticism is evident in the city’s unique Mudéjar architecture, best exemplified in historic jewels such as the breathtaking Real Alcazar (Royal Palace) and soaring Cathedral.

Speak to the Expert

Vibrant Seville is a city of festivals. Time your visit for spring and you’ll get to enjoy fanatic processions of pre-Easter Holy Week, known here as Semana Santa, or the kaleidoscopic Feria de Abril, when the city overflows with flamenco, food, wine, and horse processions.

Culturally the city is among the richest in the Iberian peninsula. Seville is perhaps most famous as the home of flamenco, a fiery, passionate form of dance that is unique to this region and can be enjoyed in tapas bars and theaters all across the city. It’s also played host to some of Spain’s finest painters such as Velazquez, de Zurbaran, and Murillo, aas well as the legendary poet Fernando de Herrara. Don Quixote, arguably Spain’s most famous work of fiction, was largely written during de Cervantes’ stay in a Sevilla jail.

With its location in the far south of Spain, the city is one of the warmest in Europe, experiencing warm temperatures year-round and scorching hot summers. It’s a wonderful city to be outdoors in, strolling the historic lanes of the Jewish Quarter, dining al fresco in tapas bars, and enjoying majestic public spaces such as the Plaza de Espana or alluring Parque de Maria Luisa.

What to do in Seville

  • Gaze at the beauty of Real Alcazar

Downtown Seville is littered with historic gems including the soaring Seville Cathedral and the golden tower of Terre del Oro, but the crowning glory has to be this breathtaking 7th-century Royal Palace. Real Alcazar is an architectural masterpiece, a marriage of Muslim and Christian influences – known as Mudéjar, a design style unique to Andalusia – which has been frequently rebuilt and embellished since its original use as a Cordaban fort in AD 913. The Palace has a strict allocation of 350 visitors at a time, so we recommend coming early to beat both the queues and the midday heat.

  • Walk through captivating Barrio Santa Cruz

Many find a walk through a captivating neighborhood of historic villas, narrow alleys, and winding cobbled streets a true highlight of visiting European cities, and Seville certainly does not disappoint. There are many atmospheric enclaves to explore, but our favorite is the Barrio Santa Cruz, conveniently located just behind the Real Alcazar. Formerly the Jewish Quarter of Seville, Santa Cruz now encompasses much of the historic city center and is a maze of attractive squares and inviting shops. Pause for a rest at the scenic Jardines de Murillo or one of several excellent tapas venues.

  • Take in picturesque Parks and Plazas

As one of Spain’s warmest cities, Seville has more than its fair share of airy public spaces in which to enjoy fine Andalusian sunshine. The Plaza de Espana – created originally for the World’s Fair in 1929 – is one of the city’s most striking spaces, backed by an imposing neo-Moorish governmental complex and fronted by a wide expanse of gorgeous mosaics, fountains, and mini-bridges. Immediately across from the Plaza is the Parque de Maria Luisa, Seville’s famous central oasis featuring landscaped gardens, shady orange groves, horse-drawn carriages for hire, and two wonderful museums.

  • Watch (and maybe learn!) flamenco

Seville is also renowned as one of the liveliest cities in Spain – with strong competition! – thanks to its many colorful festivals and moreover as the home of Flamenco, a passionate traditional dance that originates from Andalusia. Flamenco performances are found all over the city, particularly in the bars and restaurants of the central Triana district. The most impressive performances are in classic theater settings, such as El Palacio Andaluz, and you can also see performances and interactive exhibitions at the comprehensive Museo de Baile Flamenco. If you’re really keen, speak to your consultant about arranging flamenco classes while in Seville – there’s really no better place to learn!

When to visit Seville

Situated in the dry south of Spain, Seville experiences some of the warmest temperatures in Europe. During the high summer months of July and August, it is not uncommon for temperatures to meet and exceed 100F. With glorious sunshine and cool sea breezes down on the coast, this is ideal weather for beach lovers, but not a great time for sightseeing. For touring itineraries, the best time to visit is either side of summer, from March to early June and September to October. During these months temperatures hover between a very pleasant 50-80F and there’s very little rain around. If you had the choice, we’d definitely recommend visiting in the former period as you’ll find the city blooming with jasmine and orange trees, complemented by Seville’s colorful Semana Santa and Feria de Abril festivals. Note that during the winter months the temperature rarely drops below 45F so this is still a good (and very quiet) time to visit.
