In the Old Town, you’ll find countless outstanding eateries, impressive landmarks that surround a grand cathedral, and an excellent choice of cultural events. You’ll get a good sense of the city’s pulse from Plaza de la Constitucion, the square in the heart of Old Town, framed by four-story arcade buildings. Once a bull-fighting arena, today it’s a great place to unwind at a table on a terrace of one of the many tapas bars and restaurants.

Spending time on crescent-shaped La Concha Beach is a must. Often named among the most beautiful urban stretches in Europe, it enjoys a dramatic cityscape backdrop with mountains flanking its sides. Sunbathing, swimming, and sea kayaking are all possible here while the bustling seaside promenade is ideal for a stroll while people watching.

What to do in San Sebastian

  • Spend an Afternoon at La Concha Beach

Playa de la Concha is one of the prettiest beaches in all of Spain, a striking crescent of sand that curves for nearly a mile around the tranquil Bay of La Concha from the City Hall to Pico del Loro. Elegant and cosmopolitan, it’s backed by lush green mountains and ideal for a long walk while enjoying the breathtaking view. During the summer, many like to enjoy a refreshing if chilly swim – some locals even enjoy it in the winter. You can even swim or paddle a kayak out to Santa Clara Island that you’ll see rising from the waters.

  • Sample the Many Pintxos Bars in the Old Town

Pintxos is the Basque term for tapas, although there is a small difference. They’re both small bar bites, like appetizers, but pintxos are typically skewed to a piece of bread with a toothpick. They’re typically eaten with family and friends, paired with small glasses of beer or wine, with a strong social component. You’ll find many pintxos bars for sampling them in the Old Town’s maze of small streets. The pintxos culture is what attracts many here from around the world and going on a pintxos crawl is one of the best things to do, although there are also locally guided pintxos tours.

  • Take in a Panoramic View from the Top of Mount Igueldo by Riding the Funicular

Located at the end of La Concha Bay, Mount Igueldo marks the limit between the city and the sea. By riding the 1912 funicular railway you can reach its summit for an iconic view over San Sebastian, the coast, and the waves that dramatically break against the cliffs. You’ll also be taking a trip back in time as it holds a secret: an amusement park from yesteryear that captures the essence of the Belle Epoque with a mix of old and modern attractions. There’s also an old wood-fired lighthouse with exhibits on the area’s way of life and customs.

  • Browse or Shop the Fresh Market: Mercado de La Bretxa

A culinary temple, Mercado de La Bretxa is the city’s oldest market, dating back to 1870, although it has evolved significantly since. It began as a traditional marketplace but today it’s a shopping center with modern shops, eateries, and traditional stalls. Here you can experience Basque history and the food culture where locals and Michelin-star chefs shop for everything from seasonal fruits and vegetables to fresh fish, meat, salt cod, cheeses, and flowers. The aromas and flavors of the items on offer are testaments to the effort, and the love, with which the products are cultivated and taken to the market.

When to visit San Sebastian

Unlike cities in southern Spain, San Sebastian’s summers aren’t brutally hot with temperatures typically hovering around the mid-20s Celsius/mid- to upper-70s Fahrenheit. This is the busiest and the most expensive time to visit with a high demand for accommodation. Come in the latter part of May or September for warm days without paying the highest prices of the year or battling thick crowds.
