When to visit Egypt

Summer is the off-season, a time when the hardy and expert divers tend to come, with the mercury climbing to well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. This is the time when visibility in the Red Sea is best, attracting experienced divers from around the globe to enjoy the optimal conditions, although diving is possible year-round. If you think you can brave the heat, sightseeing without the crowds is possible by taking advantage of the early morning hours before retreating to a hotel pool or air-conditioned room.

Winter is the best time to visit with temperatures typically hovering in the 70s during the day and the 60s at night, although this is when the masses come, making it essential to book accommodation and cruises well in advance.

Best time to go to Egypt

Weather patterns do vary, this is just a guide based on historical patterns and data.

Summer

May through September

There are only two seasons in Egypt, with the summer season falling between May and September, a time when temperatures can climb well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the low season and few except the very hardy will want to do any sightseeing now, although serious divers will be heading to the Red Sea coast. They’re willing to endure the searing heat on land in return for the excellent underwater visibility and warm sea conditions. As Egypt can be dived year-round, most casual drivers prefer to give summer a miss. Beaches will still be packed as it’s the peak time for domestic tourism, with Egyptians filling the Mediterranean coast. Far fewer international visitors come during this time which means you can escape the crowds at most tourist sites and enjoy air-conditioning in your hotel room or swimming in the pool, if there is one, in between.  By late September, the weather will start to be more bearable.

Early in the season, in May, daytime highs average in the 80s Fahrenheit, so it won’t be overwhelmingly hot. Do be aware that the khamsin, or hot winds, can sweep across the country for a few days at some point. June kicks off the worst of summer’s heat, but temperatures aren’t yet at their peak. It can be a good time to come if you’re looking for lower prices, fewer crowds, and don’t mind enduring the high temperature. The average daytime high is 90, but it can get closer to 100.

Winter

October through April

October through April is the best time to visit Egypt with much more comfortable temperatures, typically ranging in the 70s or low 80s, and in the 60s at night, depending on the destination. It’s ideal weather for exploring all the sights from the Pyramids to the Valley of the Kings. You can expect bright blue skies that make it a joy to delve into the Pharaonic riches and ramble around all the ancient ruins. This is a great time of year to visit the temples in Luxor and Aswan as well as enjoy a cruise along the Nile, allowing travelers to make the most of offshore day trips and visit the top attractions in comfort. The Red Sea coast offers plenty of winter sun to bask in as well. The evenings can be quite cool, sometimes bringing temperatures around the upper 40s or low 50s by late autumn so you’ll want to bring a jacket.

Do keep in mind that as winter is the high season for visiting Egypt, accommodation prices and cruise rates will be higher, especially around the holidays, between Christmas and New Year. It also makes it important to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. If you’re looking for that sweet spot that strikes a happy medium with fewer tourists and pleasant weather, October is arguably the best month. The temperatures begin to cool for comfortable sightseeing and while cruising the Nile you can take advantage of the soft light that’s great for photography.
