Where to go in Jordan

Despite its relatively small size, with its welcoming locals, wealth of archeological sites, fascinating mix of cultures and epic landscapes, Jordan really packs a punch. Amman, Jordan’s capital city, a bustling metropolis with plenty of historical and cultural attractions including the Roman Amphitheater, the Citadel, is a city not to be missed. Beyond Amman, to the north, the ancient Roman city of Jerash, known for its well-preserved ruins, including the Oval Plaza, the Temple of Zeus, and the Hadrian’s Arch is a must see. Wadi Rum, the desert valley in southern Jordan with its distinctive landscape of red sandstone mountains and sandy desert terrain, proves a Bucket List destination for adventure-seekers looking for adrenaline filled rock climbing adventures, and those looking to experience Jordan’s Bedouin culture alike.

Nature lovers will find the Dana Biosphere Reserve’s diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare species like the Syrian wolf and the Nubian ibex a dream with the opportunity to go hiking, mountain biking or bird watching, or stay in a traditional Bedouin village.

Our guide to Jordan’s principal destinations is below. You’ll find there’s a lot to see and a great deal of variety on offer! Please speak to our specialists if you’d like more information on any of these locations.

Northern Jordan

Amman

Most travelers to Jordan begin by arriving in to the capital city of Amman and then head straight for Petra or one of the other popular destinations, but they’re missing out. It offers a mix of ancient and modern making it worth spending time in. Discover centuries-old ruins like the dramatic Citadel which includes the Roman Temple of Hercules and the 8th-century Umayyad Palace complex. On another hillside, you’ll find a Roman theater. The Bohemian district of Jabal Amman is a cultural hub with bookshops, art galleries, restaurants, and cafes.

Northern Jordan

Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is actually a lake, sitting at nearly 1,400 feet below sea level. Its high salt content, 10 times more than seawater, causes the water to carry your body so that you float like a cork, no matter how much falafel you’ve indulged in. It also has a mineral content with elements like magnesium that’s said to provide healing properties that are especially good for the skin. One of the most popular things to do other than float is to cover up with the nutrient-rich mud, let it dry and then rinse off, a natural purifying mask.

Southern Jordan

Petra

One of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, Petra is a place where Hellenistic architecture blends with ancient Eastern traditions. The stunning ‘Lost City’ was built around the 1st-century BC, after a series of earthquakes it was abandoned, only to be rediscovered in 1812. Carved right into the sandstone cliffs, with dozens of impressive Greco/Roman-style tombs revealing what was once one of the largest and richest kingdoms in the ancient world. To reach it you’ll walk through the Siq, a narrow crack that’s a split in the massive slab of rock, a procession that provides heightened anticipation of what awaits.
