When to visit Morocco
Morocco is a year-round destination with everything from breathtaking coastlines and idyllic beaches to mountains and desert where you can ride atop a camel. It’s also renowned for its mouth-watering cuisine that you’ll appreciate no matter when you go, but like just about anywhere else, depending on the areas that you visit and what you hope to do, there are months that are better for visiting than others. The country has an extremely varied landscape with mountains, desert and coastal regions so conditions vary massively.
The seasons in Morocco are similar to those of the USA and UK, winter is December to February and summer is May to September. The closer you are to the desert the hotter and dryer it becomes. In the north and along the coast it tends to be cooler due to the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Morocco’s Atlas Mountains are very cold in the winter due to the altitude but pleasant in the summer. For most people looking to visit the main sights and walk through the historic cities, Fall and Spring are the best times as the temperature is warm and pleasant.

Weather patterns do vary, this is just a guide based on historical patterns and data.
Winter Low Season
December – February
During the winter months it is best to stay in the south of Morocco where the temperature stays moderate. A dusting of snow isn’t unusual in the northern part of Morocco in the winter. The Atlas Mountains look beautiful with their snow-capped peaks but you cannot hike in the mountains during the winter. Coastal regions stay mild and warm even in the winter. The desert daytime temperatures are pleasant but can be very cold at night.
Spring Peak Season
March – April
Spring is a great time to visit Morocco, the cold of winter has passed and the extreme heat of summer has not arrived. The landscape is lush and green from the winter rains making the landscape even more beautiful. The only downside to April is that the Sirocco winds can whip up sandstorms out it the desert.
Summer Low Season
May – September
During the peak summer months of June, July and August, it can get uncomfortably hot, particularly in Fes, Marrakech and southwest Morocco. The Sahara Desert is extremely hot during these months (40c/104F). Coastal destinations like Essaouira and Tangiers will be more comfortable thanks to the ocean breeze and warm ocean temperatures.
Fall Peak Season
September – November
Fall is the perfect time for sightseeing in Morocco, the most intense summer heat has passed and the cold of winter has not yet arrived. The days are warm and perfect for walking through the markets, exploring the desert and the mountains.
