Best Places to Travel in June
Where Should I Travel in June?
European destinations like France and Portugal are beautiful in June. Days in cities like Lisbon and Porto are warm and full of sunshine so embrace it – sit out on a sunny terrace, sipping a glass of local wine and watch the world go by. There are also festivals that begin in June, such as the Feast of St Anthony in Lisbon – where you can enjoy sardines and fresh fish on a daily basis. In France, the garden of Claude Monet is blooming with colourful poppies and roses, and cities like Paris and Normandy offer a vibrant atmosphere.
Zambia
Where to stay – South Luangwa National Park, Lower Zambezi National Park
Compared to many other safari destinations which are open year-round, Zambia is a very seasonal safari destination. The period between November and May is closed (some camps do stay open), and often inaccessible due to the thick, black cotton soil that the rain turns up. The period between June and October is the dry season so most of the camps and lodges reopen at the beginning of June (some late May). There are several national parks to visit for your safari in Zambia, but we’d highly recommend the South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi National Park as the best options. Both parks are accessible via a light aircraft flight from Lusaka (the capital), and as soon as you land on the bush airstrip, your safari will begin. Temperatures are warm and comfortable in June as it is the start of the season. The grasses will be longer and greener compared to the end of the season (October) when the landscape will be much drier.
Slovenia
Where to stay – Lake Bled, Ljubljana
Located in Central Europe, Slovenia is a country with great contrasts. In the winter months (between December and March), temperatures are cold and there is an abundance of snow on the mountains. This makes it a great time to visit for skiers. In contrast, as spring and summer arrives, the valleys across Slovenia warm up quickly, and the blue lakes glisten amongst the green hills. Summer in Slovenia, including June, is one of the most picturesque landscapes across all of Europe! The weather is warm and dry, which makes it a great time to explore all that Slovenia has to offer, including destinations like Lake Bled and Ljubljana. For active travelers, June is a fantastic time to visit as it offers the best hiking conditions, as well as other adventurous activities like whitewater rafting.
Croatia
Where to stay – small ship cruise in Croatia
June is the first month of the official high season in Croatia, central Europe. The weather is constantly sunny and warm, with inviting temperatures around 80°F. With many tourist destinations in Croatia being on the coast, or their own island, there is often a coastal breeze to enjoy. The Adriatic Sea is also relatively warm, which makes the sea stops enjoyable on your small ship cruise. Our luxury small ship cruises in Croatia run from May to October. Hopping on board a small ship cruise is a fantastic way to explore the Dalmatian Coast and see Croatia from another perspective. With a choice of Signature, Deluxe and Superior cruises to choose from, our specialists are here to talk you through the best small ship cruise for you. Although our cruises have set dates, we can add on land itineraries to suit your travel requirements and dreams.
Indonesia
Where to stay – Bali, Lombok
Although Indonesia has such a variation of temperatures and weather conditions, June is a good time to visit the islands of Bali and Lombok. June is in the middle of the dry season in Indonesia (which runs from April to October), so although temperatures can get warm in places, it’s unlikely you will experience heavy rains. That said, it is a tropical destination so definitely bring a lightweight raincoat incase of a short, sporadic shower. For active travelers, the surfing conditions in Bali’s west coast in June are the best. This is also the case for other watersports activities, with diving and snorkeling offering good visibility in the ocean. Before temperatures heat up (later in the summer), June is a good time to enjoy some hiking – be it through rice paddies or up volcanoes! Our Asia specialists have traveled extensively around Indonesia and would love to stary curating your dream trip.
Rwanda
Where to stay – Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda is a beautifully vibrant country located in East Africa. Although it has a strong production in coffee and a rich (and quite distressing history), the first thing that many people think of about Rwanda is the mountain gorillas, and rightly so! A male silverback gorilla can weigh up to 180 kilograms and are very protective in nature, so it’s no surprise that coming face-to-face with this giant can be an intimidating experience. But it is also a humbling and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Although you can trek to see the gorillas year-round, June is the start of the main dry season and consequently, offers warm and good conditions to hike through the Volcanoes National Park (which is part of the Virunga Mountains). It’s also a good time to combine with a safari in East Africa, such as the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It’s easy to combine both national parks as a small aircraft flight goes between the Serengeti National Park and Kigali (from which it is a 2-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park).
Malaysian Borneo
Where to stay – Malaysian Borneo
June is within the dry season for Borneo (which runs from March to October), and it is a fantastic time to explore the jungles, rainforests, and beaches. Borneo is an exceptional destination for those looking for adventure and wildlife. On specific beaches, you’ll see turtles hatching at this time of year which is a wonderful and wholesome sight. Similarly, it is arguably the best time to see orangutans in the tropical rainforests as they thrive on plentiful fruits that are ripe in June. Although you can see wild orangutans in Borneo, there is also an Orangutan Rehabilitation Center in Sepilok, which allows you meet rescued orangutans, and allows you to get much closer than you would with wild primates. This is a nice experience to do, especially with families, as you get the opportunity to learn about these incredibly intelligent and wonderful primates. Note that July and August do become very busy because of the school holidays.
Canada
Where to stay – Canadian Rockies
The summer months between mid-May and September is the best time to visit the Canadian Rockies. This is because temperatures begin to rise, conditions for hiking become clearer and better, and the glacial hikes often become accessible as the snow starts to melt. Regardless of the season, packing waterproof jackets, and lots of clothing layers is essential when you visit the Rockies. Mornings and evenings can drop down in temperature, and contrastingly, when the suns out, the temperature can rise fairly quickly. For active travelers, definitely consider hopping on board the Rocky Mountaineer which is a luxury train journey through the iconic mountains. For more active travelers, June is a great time to visit if you want to do some hiking and watersports like kayaking or swimming. Canada is such a huge and diverse country that there are so many destinations to combine in a Canada itinerary. Whether it’s food and wine, active, or wildlife experiences, Canada has it all.
Tanzania
Where to stay – Nomad Lamai, Sayari Camp, Lemala Kuria Hills
The period between June and October is regarded the best time to enjoy a Tanzania safari. This is because it is the dry season which makes game viewing much more reliable. Although you can see the wildebeest migration year-round in the Serengeti National Park, July is a particularly good time to see these extensive herds. In July, the herds are located in the northern plains of the Serengeti, where they graze before they cross the Mara River into the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Although the movement of the herds varies each year (depending on the rain patterns), the end of June/ July is often a reliable month to see a river crossing. With around 1.5 million wildebeest accompanied by 200,000 zebra, a river crossing is just as loud, manic, and eye-opening as you can imagine. The sounds, sights, and smells are intense, and hundreds of hungry crocodiles lurk in the waters.
Portugal
Where to stay – Lisbon, Porto
Summer is the warmest and busiest time of the year in Portugal, as well as many other southern European countries. The temperature is warm and there is an abundance of blue skies and bright sunshine. This makes it a wonderful time to sightsee across Portugal’s cosmopolitan cities, as well as enjoy the quieter pace of living in more remote areas. Portugal’s food and wine scene is becoming increasing popular and, with long warm evenings in June, there is no better time to indulge in al fresco restaurants and cafes around the cosmopolitan cities. Dried hams, port, cherry liquor, and seafood are all delicacies in Portugal.
