Best Places to Travel in October
Where Should I Travel in October?
October is a good month to visit Jordan as scorching temperatures have cooled down from the summer, leaving autumn with pleasant mid-high 20° Celsius. Much of Europe is cooler too, so cities like Rome, Paris, Lisbon, Dubrovnik and many more, are more enjoyable to sightsee during September and October months. In Africa, the wildebeest migration herds make their way from the Masai Mara in Kenya to the northern plains of Tanzania during the October to November window. If you’re lucky, you will be able to see the world-class river crossings.
Cambodia
Where to stay – Phum Biatang Resort, Hotel Bambu, Song Saa Resort
Cambodia’s tropical climate can be split into two clear seasons: a hot and wet season between May and August, and then a warm and dry season between October and March. In between are a few shoulder months which are transitional periods. Thus October is a great time to visit Cambodia, with warm and dry weather across the country. There is so much to see and do in this South East Asian gem. For many, the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Cambodia is the combination of beautiful Angkor temples that make up Angkor Wat. Located in Siem Reap, Angkor Wat is the largest religious structure in the world by land area, and represents what was the capital of the Khmer Empire. Beyond Angkor, there is so much to explore in Cambodia, including Phnom Penh, Battambang, and the picturesque coastlines and islands like Koh Ouen and Koh Rong.
Ethiopia
Located in East Africa, the best time to visit Ethiopia is regarded the September to April window. Much of Ethiopia sits over 1,500 meters high (with some highlands over 3,000m), so it has a different climate to neighboring countries which are mostly year-round destinations. This altitude means that mornings and evenings tend to be cold, no matter how hot it is in the day. The key to this is to pack layers, and always have both a jumper and sun cream to hand. Much of the landscapes in Ethiopia are flourishing with live and color during this month, so on route to new destinations across the country, keep an eye out for photo opportunities with vibrant flora and fauna.
Seychelles
Where to stay – Constance Ephelia, Carana Beach Hotel, The H Resort Beau Vallon Beach
The best times to visit the Seychelles are between the April to May period, and the October to November. These two periods in the year are between the trade winds which hit the island each year – so they offer more protection and calm weather. The temperature in October is around the 82°F mark, with a mixture of sunshine and short, tropical showers. With over 100 islands making up the Seychelles, there is so much to do and see. Mahe Island is the largest, home to most local people and tourists alike. The archipelago here is stunning – white-sand beaches, palm-fringed coasts, and crystal-clear waters to swim, snorkel and dive through. Local guides and divers will advise the best spots underwater, including Anse Takamaka in the south-east, and Anse Soleil.
Jordan
Where to stay – Wadi Rum, Petra, Dead Sea
With the summer being almost unbearably hot in the Middle East, these countries including Jordan, are best visited during the spring and autumn months, when the temperature is cooling down. In October, the temperature is pleasant and perfect for exploring the cities, wandering Petra, or hiking through nature reserves and vast desert landscapes. However, with cooler conditions, it does make the autumn months like October a peak time to visit so be aware you will be amongst crowds, especially at iconic landmarks like ancient Petra and the Dead Sea. For those looking for a unique experience, we’d recommend sleeping out in Wadi Rum in a Bedouin Camp. Under a blanket of glistening stars, you’ll experience an authentic luxury tent, with traditional drinks and dinner made for you. Zambia
Where to visit – South and North Luangwa National Park
October is the very end of the dry season in Zambia, and the last month before the bush camps begin to close. Temperatures start to rise in October and as a result, the wildlife becomes more desperate for water and shelter from the sun. Waterholes are the only place where animals can drink from, as most of the rivers and channels have dried up. This means that game viewing is exceptionally good in October – one of the best months of the year in fact. The predators like lion prides, leopards and wild dog know exactly where these waterholes are, and which animals are brave enough to risk satisfying their thirst with predators around. It’s a great time to experience a kill on safari (although never guaranteed) but be aware that it is much hotter and as you head into November, accommodation becomes more limited.
Bolivia
Where to stay – Lake Titicaca, La Pax, Santa Cruz
The period of April to October is the best time to visit Bolivia, located in South America. As the country is so large, there are microclimates around each region. In October, temperatures vary from 62-87°F, in Lake Titicaca and Santa Cruz respectively. With that in mind, it’s important to pack suitably, with layers and waterproof clothing ready at all times. In the southern Altiplano, the sky is blue and clear, but temperatures really do drop at night, so again, pack warmly. The best time to visit the iconic Salar de Uyuni Salt Flat is between the September to November window. This is when the salt flats are dry. If you want to see them wet, visit between December and April. Either option will be unforgettable, but some people have a particular photograph or landscape in mind that needs to be planned accordingly.
Vietnam
Where to stay – Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An
Although Vietnam’s climate is tropical and fairly dramatic, October is a month which offers good weather for almost all of the main destinations: clear weather in the north of the country (in Hanoi and Halong Bay), warm weather trekking in Sapa, and dry conditions for historic sites down south (Hue and Hoi An). With so many regions and destinations in Vietnam, there is so much to do. Whether you are interested in food and cooking, meeting local people, being active, enjoying history and culture, or simply just relaxing on the beaches, Vietnam offers something for everyone. The Vietnamese are fantastic hosts, so taking a family to Vietnam is certainly not an issue. Get stuck in with engaging activities, like village walks in the Mekong Delta, cooking classes in Hanoi or, for older children, cycling tours around Hue.
Bhutan
Where to stay – Located in central Asia, bordering countries like China and Nepal, Bhutan has becoming increasingly popular as a destination over the years. Bhutan is a Buddhist kingdom on the Himalayas’ eastern region, known for its mountain ranges, dramatic landscapes, vast valleys, and breathtaking monasteries and religious buildings. October is a great time to visit Bhutan because, although it is crisp and fresh (especially in the mornings and evenings), the air is clear, the sun is out, and the visibility is exceptional for hiking. It’s also a time where many cultural journeys take place, with local people hiking between monasteries, and celebrating the colorful festival of tsechus in October. Bhutan is a fantastic destination for active travelers and adventure seekers. Our Asia specialists will be more than happy to discuss Bhutan as a destination with you more.
Namibia
Where to visit – Skeleton Coast, Caprivi Strip
October is the last month of Namibia’s winter period. The temperature starts to rise, and the rainfall begins to decrease. The skies are clear which makes stargazing at night one of the most awe-inspiring things to see. Bird watching is also fantastic in October, with the European and southern bee-eater breeding during this time. These cute and charismatic birds make for an enjoyable sighting. While you can do a safari in Namibia, the country is more focused on the unique experiences and vast landscapes that make your jaw drop. For adrenaline-junkies, you can sky dive, bungee jump, dune surf, and dive across Namibia.
USA
Where to stay – New York City
October is autumn/ the fall in America, and arguably one of the best times to visit the Big Apple. New York can be visited year-round, and some travelers want a specific experience. For example, visiting New York at Christmas is often on many people’s bucket lists. Others prefer the idea of hot weather and sunbathing in Central Park in the summer months. The transitional months – autumn and spring – are often great in-between months, for those looking for a comfortable temperature with plenty of atmosphere. Temperatures in October are still warm, averaging around 50-68°F, so many of the cafes and restaurants will still offer al fresco dining and seating areas. There is so much to do in New York – the food scene is just one of them. Head to Brooklyn, Harlem, Manhattan and the Upper West Side to sample some of their delicacies.
