Why we love luxury Kenyan Coast vacations
Gemma
Africa Specialist
There is so much you can do on the Kenyan Coast. There are plenty of coral reefs to explore, either by snorkeling or diving and, as the Indian Ocean offers warm temperatures, it is an enjoyable activity. Most of the hotels will provide snorkeling equipment, but there are also local watersports companies that can take you out on the boats to explore other areas.
Combining a luxury Kenya safari with some time on the beach is also very popular. There are daily flights on small aircraft planes available, so you can be on safari in the morning, and on the beach by the afternoon. Some of the best beaches on the Kenyan coast include Diani Beach and Watamu Beach. These have often been rated as some of the most picturesque beaches in East Africa.
When to visit the Kenyan Coast
The best time to visit the Kenyan coast is between the July and October period. This is the hottest and driest time of the year and, with plenty of sunshine, it makes for great weather for lounging on the beach. The period between December and March is also good, but the weather does tend to heat up dramatically in March before the rains arrive in April and May. The coast tends to be a little cooler because of the sea breeze, but March can get very humid. Avoid April and May which is the rainy period.

Your Kenyan Coast questions answered
Which is better – Zanzibar Island or the Kenyan Coast?
Because of the popularity of combining a luxury safari with a beach trip, we get asked this question a lot. Of course, being in the same country, it is easier to combine a Kenya safari with the Kenyan coast (and vice versa for Tanzania), but there are draws to both destinations. Of course, the Kenyan coast is beautiful and idyllic, with white sand beaches and an overall, very clean and scenic landscape. I would argue the beaches on the Kenyan coast are better than some in Zanzibar, and less affected by the tides. That said, Zanzibar Island is very rich in history and culture, and has the capital city of Stone Town which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – so arguably, there is more to do in Zanzibar.
What activities can I do on the Kenyan Coast?
For many people, being on the beach is a time to relax and enjoy the downtime (quite often after the safari). The hotels will have loungers around the pool, and often on the beach that you can use for the day. The Indian Ocean is right on your doorstep so you can enjoy water sports like snorkeling, diving, sunset boat trips, and more. The nearby towns and cities, like Mombasa and Watamu, are also worth visiting.
Which hotel is best for me on the Kenyan Coast?
Of course, this completely depends on your preference of hotel and what you are looking for. There are larger hotels, like Hemingways Watamu, which has approximately 40 rooms, with a variety of amenities and facilities on offer. On the other hand, there are much smaller and more boutique-style hotels like Afrochic or Kinondo Kwetu, which have much fewer rooms but offer seclusion and more of an intimate feel. The best way to find your perfect hotel is to get in touch with our specialists. On a phone call, we can find out what sort of accommodation you like and offer our professional expertise.
