For those looking to combine the highlights of Tanzania into a compact itinerary, this is a great option. You’ll start your trip on the idyllic island of Zanzibar, enjoying white sand beaches and azure waters. The hotel sits slightly back from the white-sand beaches and offers a range of facilities like a swimming pool and luxury villas. After your time relaxing in Zanzibar, you’ll fly to the Manyara airstrip to start your safari. You’ll spend two nights in the Ngorongoro Highlands where you will get the chance to game drive in both Lake Manyara National Park and descend down into the Ngorongoro Crater.

You’ll then make your way to the Serengeti National Park to spend three nights on safari, with the opportunity to see the Great Migration. Depending on the time of year, you will either fly to the northern plains of the Serengeti (June to October) or head down to the Ndutu plans in the south (December to March) to witness the calving season. On the final day, you will fly from the Serengeti airstrip to Kilimanjaro, where you will connect to your international flights home.

Day by Day Itinerary

Days 1 - 5
Zanzibar
You will be met at Zanzibar International Airport where you will be transferred to The Residence – your home for the next five nights. The island of Zanzibar offers something for everyone. For those who are looking to do some day trips from the beach, we would recommend a day trip to Stone Town. This is the capital of Zanzibar and is regarded as a UNESCO world heritage site. The town is filled with history and culture so we would definitely recommend a guided tour through the alleyways of Stone Town to soak in the atmosphere. For those who are keen on watersports, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy the waters of Zanzibar. You can do snorkeling, diving, kite surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, dhow sunset trips, and many more. Zanzibar is famous for its spices and as a result, is often referred to as ‘spice island’. You can visit one of the spice farms and get a private tour – smelling, seeing, and tasting the spices, fruits, and vegetables grown.

Days 6 - 7
Ngorongoro Crater
After your time spent on the beautiful island of Zanzibar, you will fly across to Manyara airstrip where you will be met on arrival by your safari guide. It is now time to head to another of Tanzania’s most iconic destinations – the Ngorongoro Crater. Located in the Ngorongoro highlands, you will spend the next two nights at Plantation Lodge. Beautiful well-kept gardens and coffee plantation hills surround the lodge, so you will instantly feel at one with nature. Relax at Plantation Lodge, ready for another day of excitement tomorrow. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the Wonders of the World, and rightly so! As the largest inactive caldera in the world, the Ngorongoro Crater attracts thousands of visitors each year to witness the views from the top, and experience the famous game drive down the crater rim. As you leave Plantation Lodge in the morning, make sure you wear lots of layers as temperatures are much cooler at the top of the crater. The lodge itself is conveniently located close to three national parks – the Ngorongoro Crater (where you can descent down for a game drive), Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park. As such, it works well in a driving itinerary when you combine the northern parks, especially if you then head onto the Serengeti after. The lodge is excellent value for money and offers accommodation to suit all – honeymooners, families, couples or solo travelers. Surrounding the lodge are coffee plantations, a working farm and well-kept gardens and vegetable patches. The food served and made at Plantation Lodge is all home-grown and this is one of the main draws to this lodge over others in the are. The décor of Plantation Lodge is very colonial and as it’s owner-run, it offers an welcoming and intimate atmosphere.

  The Highlands Overview
  This camp is a standout across all of Tanzania, if not Africa! Situated in the remote forest of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania, The Highlands Camp has redefined the Ngorongoro Crater experience completely. Compared to other lodges which sit on the crater rim, the Highlands Camp is situated much further from the crater rim itself and instead, sits in a remote forest that skirts the Olmoti Volcano. The accommodation itself is award-winning and is like no other. Eight domed canvas and glass suites perch high above the forest, offering exquisite views across the forest. There are two domes in the main area – one for dining and the other is a lounge/bar area. As the temperatures are much cooler, all of the domes have their own stove fire which makes it much warmer and cosier. The décor is very Scandi, with faux fur rugs, minimal design and statement artwork. The experience at The Highlands is something to rave about alone. Here you can do hikes, day trips to the soda lake in Empakaai crater, local community visits and much more.
Days 8 - 10
Serengeti National Park
After breakfast and a morning coffee, you will begin your drive to the Serengeti National Park. Once you enter the boundaries of the Serengeti, you will continue to drive to the southern plains of the Serengeti (between November and March). This is where the luxury tented camp is located and your home for the next three nights – Kichakani Camp. This is a mobile tented camp offering luxury accommodation and excellent guiding. For the next three nights, you will enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in one of the greatest national parks in all of Africa. Out on your game drive, you will drive through a variety of landscapes, with the opportunity to see elephant, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, and antelope to name a few. As most cats are territorial, your guide will know the best locations for big such as lion prides, cheetah, and leopard. Note that if you are doing this itinerary between June and October, you will fly from the Ngorongoro Crater to the northern plains of the Serengeti – which is where the migration herds will be at this time of the year.

  Kichakani Camp is a mobile tented camp which means that it moves location throughout the year, following the wildebeest herds. Between January and March, the camp is located in the southern Serengeti (closest airstrip Serengeti South) where you can watch the wildebeest and their calves trot around the open plains. Between June and November, the camp packs up and moves to the northern Serengeti. In both locations, the camp itself is a beautiful mix of colonialism and exploration, and contemporary design with modern comforts. Kichakani Camp is made up of 10 canvassed tents, each with a large wooden deck overlooking the Serengeti plains, a fan, desk and a comfortable bed with a mosquito netting around. The ensuite bathrooms feature bucket showers and as you will have your own personal tent attendant, they will be there to assure the hot water is ready to go for you to enjoy your authentic bush shower. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating and you will soon become part of the Sanctuary family!

  Located in the eastern plains of the Serengeti National Park is the breath-taking camp named Namiri Plains. This camp is recognized in the safari industry because of its location. These grasslands in the eastern part of the park were closed for over 20 years to allow the cheetah population to restore naturally, without human interruption or distraction. Since its opening to the public, Namiri Plains is one of the only camps in this area so a safari here will feel completely private and secluded. Not only that, but the cheetah population has grown enormously and as a result of its success, you will not have a stay in Namiri Plains and not see a cheetah! In fact, the big cat population here is really impressive – lion prides and leopards can also be seen in this area. The camp itself is novel in its design and one of the most luxurious in all of Tanzania – offering private decks, a swimming pool, chandeliers, a library and study, private decks and free-standing baths.
