Luxury Okavango Delta Safaris

Located in northern Botswana, the Okavango Delta is an incredibly rich and diverse landscape which is certainly one of Africa’s best game-viewing destinations. Each year, the floods from Angola create tiny streams and channels, making their way down to Botswana. These annual floods are the lifeline of the Okavango Delta and are the main factor for the ever-changing landscape of the Delta.

The resident wildlife come to live with the arrival of the floods, and over hundreds of years, species have learned to adapt in such challenging conditions. Predator numbers are thriving in the Okavango Delta, including lion, cheetah, leopard, caracal, hyena, and the African wild dog. A luxury Okavango Delta safari is so varied, with activities like game drives, walking safaris, boat safaris and mokoro rides among others offered.

Speak to the Expert

One of the best things about a luxury Okavango Delta safari is that – because of it’s remoteness and sheer size – you will often feel like you have the park to yourself. If you are particular interested in a certain sighting, we can advise which area for you to stay in, as some areas are denser with predators, bird life, antelope, and more.

Why we love luxury Okavango Delta safaris

Gemma

My favorite thing about the Okavango Delta is the diversity of safari activities you can do. Unlike most national parks which are restricted to game drives only, many luxury safari camps in the Okavango Delta offer three or four different safari activities for you to enjoy. If you stay at a camp with high water density (from June onwards), you will have the opportunity to do water-based activities such as boat safaris, fishing, mokoro rides, and sunset cruises. These are a fantastic way to experience wildlife from the water, as well as enjoy smaller water-based flora and fauna, like endemic lilypads and frogs.

On land, you can enjoy morning and afternoon game drives (night drives offered in private reserves), as well as walking safaris from some safari camps. For those that have the facilities, you can also do sleep-outs which allow you to sleep under the stars in the Okavango Delta, listening to the sounds of the bush all night long.

When to visit the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is a vast inland river delta in northern Botswana, a country that’s safe, easy to get around, and one of the best wildlife safari destinations as an oasis of lagoons and rivers in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. The world’s largest inland deltas and one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Africa, the delta water swells during the rains in the highlands of Angola in January and February before pouring into the Okavango Delta between March and June.

The flood waters peak between June and August which are the dry months in Botswana, bringing thousands of animals from across Africa, with high concentrations of wildlife that include elephants, lions, hippos, black and white rhinos, leopards, crocodiles, buffalo, hyenas, and cheetah, as well as the wild dog.

Your Okavango Delta questions answered

How do I get to the Okavango Delta?

One of the best things about the Okavango Delta is that it is so remote. Located in northern Botswana, the park and its surrounding private reserves are accessible via light aircraft planes and helicopters. These small planes make it possible to get to remote plains, where your safari guide will be waiting on arrival. For those traveling from Europe or the States to Botswana, a good option is to fly to Johannesburg in South Africa, where you can then take a direct flight to Maun in Botswana. From Maun, we will organize a light aircraft plane to take you into the Okavango Delta.

How long should I stay in the Okavango Delta?

Because of the remoteness of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, I would recommend spending a minimum of 4 nights on safari here. The great thing about the Okavango Delta is that there are so many different landscapes, private reserves, and waterways that make up the reserve. Because of this, you can combine two or three areas and safari camps to give you a different experience. With that in mind, we’d recommend a combination of two camps, both with 3-4 nights in. You can also combine other safari destinations with your luxury Botswana safari, such as Chobe National Park in Botswana, or neighboring countries with safari destinations like the Kruger in South Africa, Mana Pools in Zimbabwe and the Lower Zambezi in Zambia.

What are 'dry' and 'wet' luxury safari camps in the Okavango Delta?

The Okavango Delta is a huge area of floodplains and waterways, and the water levels from the Angola floods fluctuate throughout the year which means it changes dramatically. With this in mind, some luxury safari camps are located in areas with much higher water levels. These are regarded ‘wet’ camps as they allow you to do water-based activities throughout the year, including boat safaris, fishing, and mokoro rides. The ‘dry’ camps are located on areas that are less prone to flooding, which means that you can do activities on land throughout the year, including game drives (morning and afternoon) and walking safaris.
