Luxury Chobe National Park Safaris

Chobe National Park is located in northern Botswana, and is a staple for most luxury Botswana safaris. The park is home to a wealth of resident wildlife, but most famously, Chobe is known for its population of incredibly large elephant and buffalo herds. In the dry season, you can expect as many as 50,000 – 60,000 elephants in and around the park. These phenomenal herd sightings are as impressive as they sound, and you can get to experience them both by safari jeep, and by boat – as they often cross the Chobe River.

A day on safari in Chobe National Park can look different each day, and that’s the beauty of it. You may head out on a game drive to watch the sun rise above the Savuti plains or spend the afternoon on a boat safari, cruising along the Chobe River with a sundowner in hand. Whichever way you choose to spend your day on safari, you’ll always be guided by a professional guide, who will specialize in the endemic flora and fauna.

Speak to the Expert

Chobe National Park is often combined with other safari destinations, and rightly so! Its location in northern Botswana means that it is possible to combine bucket-list destinations like Victoria Falls and other safari parks like Hwange National Park While it’s possible to do a day trip to Chobe from Vitoria Falls, we recommend spending a couple of nights in the park.

Why we love luxury Chobe safaris

If you are looking for something a little different as a safari experience, we’d highly recommend a Chobe River Cruise. Spending a few days on board the Zambezi Queen or the Chobe Princess, will give you a unique game-viewing experience. Relax on the Chobe River, dine and sleep in luxury, all while watching elephant cross the river, or crocodiles bask in the sunshine. On board, all of your meals are included, and there are plenty of areas around the boat to relax, socialize or just take in views.

When to visit Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park can be visited year-round, but the optimal time to travel is between May and October. Although the Chobe River is a permanent water source, the May to October period is the dry season which means that other sources of water inside the park may dry up. This essentially means that the animals will tend to congregate around the Chobe River and permanent water sources, making the game-viewing denser and more reliable. The vegetation is less dense and the roads are drier which makes it easier to travel around the park. This however, does mean that the park is much busier during this time, so it’s worth looking at shoulder months if you are flexible with traveling.

Your Chobe safari questions answered

How long should I spend on safari in Chobe National Park?

The great thing about the location of Chobe National Park is that you can often combine it with other destinations. A day trip from Victoria Falls to Chobe is a popular excursion, but it often means that you will arrive later into the park and by this time, there tends to already be lots of vehicles. With that in mind, we’d recommend spending either a night or two in Chobe, so that you can benefit from being one of the first safari vehicles out in the park in the morning. An extended time in Chobe also means that you can also experience other safari activities, like boat safaris, fishing, or even a boat cruise.

Can I do a luxury Chobe river cruise?

Yes, absolutely! There are several options for a Chobe river cruise, ranging in length of the cruise, the size of the vessel, accommodation style (and how luxurious it is), and price. Cruising on the Chobe is a wonderful way to experience the slower pace of a safari. We can combine a river cruise in your Africa safari itinerary, and organize transfers and other safari activities accordingly.
