How much does a safari in Uganda cost?

A Uganda safari is quite different from the conventional African safari. With destinations like Tanzania, Botswana, or Zambia, you fly directly into the national park or reserve to enjoy a couple of days or longer on game drives or bush walks. In Uganda, an itinerary combining both driving and flying is more common, combining a wealth of safari activities and wildlife species.

As our safari specialists put together luxury Uganda tours, a question that is often raised is “how much does a safari in Uganda cost”? We’ve put together a short guide to give you an insight into the cost of safari tours in Uganda.

$3-5,000 per person

One of the main highlights of Uganda, and included on almost every itinerary, is a trek through Bwindi National Park to see the mountain gorillas. With only 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild today, and only three countries to see them in, it’s no surprise that many decide to visit Uganda for this reason alone. Uganda is the cheaper of the two (compared to Rwanda) to do the gorilla trek. A gorilla permit is currently $750 per person per trek, which allows you to have one hour with the gorillas in the forest.

If you want to do a gorilla trek alone, you can fly in and out of Bwindi National Park and spend two nights in mid range safari accommodation. With internal flights and accommodation, you could do a gorilla trek in Uganda for anywhere between $3-4,000 per person, but this would be a very short trip.

$5-7,000 per person

For most visitors to Uganda, staying longer and combining other national parks and safari experiences is preferred. Private touring around Uganda allows you to see the country at your own pace, and take in all that the country has to offer. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest is, after gorilla trekking, one of the most popular safari experiences to do in Uganda.

A chimpanzee trek or a habituation experience in Kibale is often combined with a safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, because of location and accessibility. You will have your own safari guide and vehicle, so you can enjoy the safari at your own pace, enjoying a leisurely game drive along the way. In Queen Elizabeth National Park, we recommend staying a night in somewhere like Ishasha Wilderness Camp. Queen Elizabeth National Park is a savannah reserve, famous for its tree-climbing lions and its bird populations.

$7,000+ per person

This higher budget allows you to travel around more of the country. Combine destinations like Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest, Bwindi Forest and Entebbe or Kampala. A larger budget also allows you to visit remote parks like Kidepo National Park which is located on the north of the country, bordering South Sudan. To get to this park, you have to take internal flights which add to the cost of the itinerary.
