The birthplace of civilization, Egypt is filled with magic and has a fascinating 5,000-year-old past with phenomenal ancient discoveries still being uncovered today. It has almost a mythical quality, so deeply ingrained in our perceptions of culture and history. Its Great Pyramid is the only surviving one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, standing testament to the nation’s timelessness.

The Nile Valley is home to more than 90 percent of the population and it’s here that a mighty kingdom thrived for over 3,000 years. Nothing can truly prepare you for the scale, beauty, and magnificence of places like the incredible tomb complexes at the Valley of the Kings. The hot, dry climate helped to preserve many of the ancient temples, tombs, and pyramids, providing a big draw for travelers who often list Egypt among their top bucket list destinations.

Best time to visit Egypt

Egypt experiences two distinct seasons: winter (October to April) and summer (May to September). The winter months offer comfortable temperatures, ranging from the 70s to the low 80s, ideal for exploring attractions like the Pyramids and Valley of the Kings. However, the high season leads to elevated accommodation and cruise costs, especially during holidays.

In contrast, summer brings scorching temperatures exceeding 100°F, making sightseeing unappealing for most, except for avid divers heading to the Red Sea coast. For a more pleasant visit, opt for Egypt’s winter season, but be prepared for higher prices during peak times around Christmas and New Year.

Your Egypt questions answered

What are the must-visit tourist attractions in Egypt?

Egypt holidays offer a rich blend of ancient wonders, vibrant cities, sandy beaches, and stunning coral reefs. Cairo hosts the Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum. Luxor, known as an open-air museum, features Karnak and Luxor temples, the Valley of the Kings, and more. A Nile Cruise unveils scenic wonders. Aswan showcases felucca rides and the Philae Temple. Along the Red Sea Coast, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada offer golden beaches, superb snorkeling, and all-inclusive resorts. Whether exploring historic sites or relaxing on the coast, Egypt promises a diverse and captivating holiday experience.

When is the best time to visit Egypt for a vacation?

There are only two seasons in Egypt: summer from May through October and winter from November through April. The only differences between the seasons are the daytime temperatures and changes in the winds. While there are some variations in the weather depending on your particular destination, during the summer temperatures can climb well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while the winter months typically range in the 60s and low 70s. Hot winds, known as khamsin, typically arrive in April but can occur in March or May.

Do I need a visa to travel to Egypt, and how can I obtain one?

Please ensure that your passport has at least 6 months of validity after you return home in order to be allowed to enter Egypt. You can get a visa before you travel from the official Visa2Egypt portal or your nearest Egyptian consulate. Tourist visas granted using the e-visa system are valid for a maximum of 3 months. It is advisable to get a visa before you travel, particularly if traveling for work or business. If you wish to get a visa on arrival, you can do so at approved bank kiosks within airport arrival halls, before reaching immigration counters. The visa fee is US$25, payable in US dollars as the preferred currency, although you may also be able to pay in pounds sterling or euros. Visas granted on arrival are valid for a maximum of 30 days. There’s no need to buy a visa from an agent. In many cases, agents will charge more than US$25 for a visa. If you’re harassed by an agent, report the incident to the tourist police in the airport terminal.

What is the currency in Egypt, and where can I exchange money?

The local currency is the Egyptian pound (£) often written as LE although it is officially EGP. Avoid street money changers. ATMs are generally the best option for obtaining the local currency and are readily available. They often offer the best rate. Many of the higher-end hotels will accept euros or dollars but you’ll pay more than you will in Egyptian pounds. MasterCard, Visa, and American Express are accepted, but typically only larger hotels, and restaurants in tourist areas and in Cairo readily accept credit cards for payment.

How can I respect and interact with the local culture while traveling in Egypt?

Egypt is a conservative, Muslim country. Visitors from Western countries may find it to be a culture shock – it’s important to be aware that any public displays of affection, including holding hands and kissing, aren’t approved of. Shaking hands and pats on the shoulder are fine. Revealing clothing can attract unnecessary unwanted attention and is frowned upon. When visiting mosques, it’s essential to dress extra conservatively. While shorts are okay on hot days at tourist attractions, they’re only worn by tourists so you might want to consider lighter material pants instead. It’s best to avoid bringing up politics or religion. If these topics come up, tread carefully and let others guide the discussion. Discussing religion from an atheistic or similar point of view should never be done.
