Luxury Zambia Safari Tours & Vacations

Zambia offers exceptional, untamed safari experiences. Its southern African location, bordering Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Botswana, makes it a unique safari destination. South Luangwa National Park, the most visited reserve, is easily accessible and teems with diverse wildlife, including leopard, lion, hippo, giraffe, elephants, and wild dogs, making it a highlight of Eastern Zambia for safari enthusiasts.

Speak to the Expert

The Lower Zambezi National Park is a lesser-known, but truly favored safari destination. Nestled along the Zambezi River, water-based activities such as game drives, boat safaris, and canoeing dominate. Combining this park with South Luangwa is a favored safari itinerary, one I would highly recommend.

Zambia is a very wild and exhilarating safari destination and in fact, one of our personal favorites. As a landlocked country, Zambia’s national parks and expansive savannahs make up for the lack of ocean. There are a handful of exquisite national parks and reserves across Zambia, but the most popular combination is the South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi National Park.

First and foremost, the game-viewing in the South Luangwa National Park is highly rated amongst safari enthusiasts and photographers. Between the months of June and October, regular sightings of elephants, buffalo, lion, giraffe, hyena, zebra, and hippo can be seen, among much more. Leopard sightings are also very reliable, with the opportunity to see them on both morning, afternoon and night drives. The African Wild Dogs also pass through this area on a regular basis, but in their nature to cover a huge amount of land.

Fly onto the Lower Zambezi National Park for a very diverse safari experience. With the Zambezi River being the main focus of this park, safari activities offered here include game drives, walking safaris, boat safaris, canoe safaris and catch-and-release fishing. Zambia is also home to one of the Natural Wonders of the World – Victoria Falls. With light-aircraft planes connecting all national parks and destinations, you can enjoy a range of destinations.

Best Places to Go in Zambia

  • South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia spans both sides of the Luangwa River. The landscape features open plains and denser vegetation near the escarpment. The park is renowned for big cats, particularly leopards and lions, as well as hyenas and African wild dogs. Mfuwe airport in the park’s central area serves as the main entry point. While safari camps are available in the Mfuwe region, quieter and more exclusive options can be found further north and south of Mfuwe. South Luangwa is famous for its walking safaris, providing up-close encounters with wildlife.

    South Luangwa
  • Lower Zambezi National Park

Lower Zambezi National Park in eastern Zambia, south of the Luangwa Valley, centers around the northwestern part of the Zambezi River. This park offers diverse activities beyond game drives, including boat and canoe safaris, bush walks, night drives, and fly camping. Lunch and sundowners on a smaller channel are available. The park is ideal for a stand-alone safari or can be combined with other destinations like South Luangwa National Park or Victoria Falls.

    Lower Zambezi
  • Victoria Falls

Livingstone, in the southwest of Zambia, serves as the gateway to Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most impressive waterfalls. The area offers excellent hotels like the Royal Livingstone Hotel and the David Livingstone Safari Lodge, and activities including guided tours of the falls, city tours, Devil’s Pool visits, art and artisan tours, white-water rafting, sunset boat cruises, and day trips to nearby safari destinations like Chobe in Botswana.

    Victoria Falls
  • Kafue

Kafue National Park in western Zambia covers 22,500 square kilometers and boasts diverse topography and wildlife. It features riverine forests, swamps, and grassland plains, home to a variety of antelope and predators, including lions, leopards, hyenas, and cheetahs. Birdwatchers will find over 480 species. Accommodation options include Busanga Bush Camp and Shumba Camp, near the Busanga Plains, and the unique “bird nest” accommodation at Chisa Camp.

  • Lusaka

Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, is situated in the southern-central part of the country and serves as the main international gateway. Latitude 15, a luxury boutique hotel with a pool, bar, restaurant, and outdoor space, offers a pleasant place to relax during layovers or overnight stays.

  • North Luangwa National Park

North Luangwa National Park, situated north of South Luangwa National Park, is an exclusive and remote destination accessible via light aircraft. The park is less visited due to limited camps and challenging access but offers a magical experience. The Mwaleshi River and a rhino sanctuary program in the central part of the park are key attractions. Tented camps like Mwaleshi and Takwela provide a remote safari experience.

Best time to visit Zambia

The best time to visit Zambia is during its dry winter season, from May to October. This period is ideal for exploring Zambia’s wilderness and wildlife encounters. During the dry season, the country’s national parks, such as South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi, offer exceptional game viewing opportunities. The weather is comfortably cooler, and the lack of dense vegetation makes it easier to spot the diverse wildlife that inhabits this beautiful country. For those seeking to witness the majestic Victoria Falls, it’s best visited between May and July when the water flow is at its peak.

FAQs

When should I go to Zambia?

Compared to other safari destinations, Zambia is more seasonal in terms of best times to visit. The best time of year to go on safari in Zambia is the dry season between June and October. The later you go in the season, the warmer it becomes (November tends to be very hot). When the rains arrive in November/December, the black cotton soil makes areas impassable and your safari not possible.

Is Zambia good for families?

While there are plenty of safari camps and lodges that are more catered towards families (Anabezi, Lion Camp, and Mfuwe Lodge to name a few), Zambia as a whole is a very wild safari experience. There are age restrictions for some of the safari activities like the canoe and walking safari. With this in mind, I’d recommend Zambia for families with older children but not for young children.

How long should I spend at Victoria Falls?

As one of the most impressive waterfalls on Earth, Victoria Falls is definitely worth spending a couple of days at. As there are plenty of activities to enjoy, I would recommend two full days here. A guided tour of Victoria Falls on the first day is a good introduction. This then gives you another day or the evening to enjoy other excursions such as a sunset boat tour, exploring Livingstone, or more adrenaline-fueled activities like a microlight flight, or bungee jumping.

How long is a walking safari?

Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari, so whichever national park you head to, you can do some sort of walking safari. In North and South Luangwa National Park, the walking safaris usually last 3-4 hours and there is an opportunity to spend a few days walking between the different bush camps. Please get in touch to find out more about these types of walking safari itineraries.

Can I combine Zambia with another country?

Zambia is a landlocked country, bordered by Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana among others. Because of its location, it is possible to combine with another safari destination however this is more common for adding on Victoria Falls alone. As a safari destination, Zambia offers a fantastic experience so I would argue you don’t need to combine it. It is a phenomenal stand-alone destination, and one you will not forget.
