We love private tours of Hungary as it brings the opportunity to share what we love about it most. In the process of creating itineraries, we get to experience its many delights, often with a focus on beautiful Budapest, the country’s cultural heart. There are antique markets, classical musical traditions, grand architecture, thriving craft villages, and even ancient Roman ruins. Whether you’re looking for historic, modern, or a bit of both, it’s easy to find it all here.
Wine enthusiasts can even enjoy touring and tasting in the Tokay region producing some of the world’s tastiest wines. It’s a lot of fun to customize private tours to include special activities whether it’s a focus on a part of Hungarian history, the food, or various aspects of the culture. Some simply want to enjoy the best of the country’s natural wonders, like Lake Balaton, the Danube River, and the Aggtelek Caves.
As one of Europe’s most surprising destinations, there are many places to go from the exciting capital of Budapest to the ancient city of Pecs and Eger with its iconic castle that epitomizes the courage and resilience of Hungarians.
An exciting city with numerous cultural attractions and famous thermal baths, Budapest is made up of two cities, the “twins” of Buda on the west side of the Danube and Pest on the east.
Set at the base of the Mecsek Mountains, ancient Pecs is a multicultural city made up of Hungarians, Germans, Serbians, and Croatians, among others, while offering fantastic artistic and architectural treasures.
Eger is home to beautiful Baroque buildings and Eger Castle, overlooking it all as an iconic symbol of the country, as the site where the Turkish were repelled during the 1552 Siege of Eger.
There is no bad time to visit Hungary so you’ll want to consider your interests, your destinations, and the weather. Summer is the high season and the warmest time of the year, ideal for spending time at the lakes and enjoying festivals, but it’s also more expensive and you’ll encounter some big tourist crowds. Winter can get very cold but it’s wonderfully quiet for sightseeing in the cities and offers low-season accommodation rates and cozy bars and cafes. Spring and fall are arguably the best seasons to visit, especially for sightseeing, with pleasant weather, reasonable accommodation rates and airfare, and fewer crowds.
From castles and cathedrals to rivers, lakes, and caves, this is a country well worth visiting.
Hungary is home to some spectacular cities, including beautiful Budapest along the Danube, with lively neighborhoods and elegant Baroque, Neoclassical, and art nouveau buildings. The Buda side of the Danube boasts the medieval Old Town on Castle Hill, while Pest is known for its eye-catching architecture and buzzing nightlife.
Hungary cuisine is known for its hardy dishes that are often spicy but not hot, frequently using paprika, the national spice, typically made fresh from ground sweet bell peppers. It’s a treat for the tastebuds although not so great for your waistline as many are deep-fried or prepared with lard.
There’s lots to discover beyond Budapest, including Hollókő, a village where you can delve into ancient traditions and culture. It’s home to a unique ethnographic subgroup of Hungarians, known for their traditional folk costumes, including lace-trimmed, flouncy skirts. You can learn more about their unique way of life in the museums and Hollókő.
