First Time Safaris
The best time to visit Africa varies depending on the specific regions and activities you have in mind. Generally, the dry season, which typically falls between June and October, is an ideal time for safaris and wildlife viewing in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. Southern Africa also offers a great period between June and October, but it’s worth bearing in mind that it is winter in South Africa, so the temperatures are cooler. One of the country’s highlights is trekking to see mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This immersive experience allows you to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat for one hour, fostering a deep connection with our closest relatives.

Cape Town is South Africa’s cosmopolitan gem, and rightly so. The city has everything – mountains, beaches, history, culture, art, wildlife, and some of the best restaurants and fine dining in the world. Spending a few days in Cape Town is the perfect destination to combine with the Cape Winelands and a safari.
The Lower Zambezi National Park is one Zambia’s most treasured parks. Opposite Zimbabwe side, the Lower Zambezi’s position on the Zambezi River allows you to do boat and canoe safaris, enjoying a sundowner, observing crocodiles basking on the banks, hippos beneath the water, and elephants gracefully cross to higher islands.
Although there are local variations depending on which country you visit in Africa, generally speaking, Africa offers warm and pleasant temperatures year round because of its proximity to the equator. Countries in North Africa like Morocco and Egypt tend to get very hot in the middle of the summer, so shoulder seasons like May or September are attractive. For safari destinations, the period between June and October is generally the best time to visit because it offers a longer, dry season with good game viewing. That said, each national park will have its own microclimate so we can be more specific if you have a destination in mind.
All safari destinations will provide that ‘wow-factor’ to somebody who has never been on safari before, however, there are a few destinations we’d recommend for first-time safaris in particular. Kenya is a great choice and this is because of its ease and accessibility into the Masai Mara. For those traveling from the UK or the US, there are direct flights to Nairobi, and from there, you take a one-hour flight into the Masai Mara to start your safari. The game viewing is also very reliable and offers exceptional guiding, accommodation, and culture too. The second is South Africa. This is because many of the game reserves offer very high chances to see the Big Five (the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino). It’s also great value for money and less expensive than other safari destinations.
This is certainly a bucket-list experience and one that is becoming more popular which is great. The mountain gorillas live across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo across the Virunga mountain range. You can trek to see the habituated gorillas in both Uganda (Bwindi Forest) and Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park). The cost of a gorilla permit is $700 per person in Uganda, and $1,400 per person in Rwanda and this money goes directly back into the conservation and protection of the mountain gorillas. A gorilla trek can be combined with a safari too for those looking to extend the trip.
