The wildebeest migration is one of the most desired safari experiences to witness, and rightly so! With approximately 1.5 – 2 million wildebeest and zebra migrating across the plains of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, it is the largest migration on Earth. Although the herd patterns differ each year, our specialists will curate an itinerary that gives you the best opportunity to see the wildebeest migration herds, no matter what time of year you travel.

Between the months of June and October, you will stay in a luxury tented camp in the northern plains of the Serengeti, before flying across to the beautiful island of Zanzibar. Between November and March, you will stay in the southern plains of the Serengeti. Our Africa specialists will offer detailed explanations and curate the perfect safari for you. Day by Day Itinerary

Days 1 - 5
Serengeti National Park
You will be met at Kilimanjaro international airport, where you will fly directly into the Serengeti National Park. This will be in a small Cessna Caravan aircraft and as you come down to land, you will get the opportunity to see an array of animals from the air; Welcome to the Serengeti! You will spend the next five nights in a luxury tented camp called Olakira. The best thing about this camp is that, as a migration camp, it moves throughout the year based on the location of the wildebeest herds. You will have two game drives per day – one early morning and another late afternoon – to take advantage of the cooler weather, and the animals being at their most active. Your safaris will be led by professional guides and you will be looked after exceptionally well.

  Olakira Migration Camp Overview
  Olakira is one of our favorite migration camps because of its unique accommodation. As well as having canvassed tents, Olakira has an extended section which is mesh-covered so that you are able to go to sleep stargazing. Olakira Camp follows the movement of the wildebeest migration herds throughout the year. Between the months of December and March, the camp is located in the southern plains of the Serengeti and then from June to November, the camp makes its home in northern Tanzania to witness the great wildebeest crossings. Because the camp moves location throughout the year, the accommodation facilities more authentic compared to other camps or lodges. For example, Olakira’s ensuite bathrooms have bucket showers which are a novel and authentic part of the bush experience. This is one of our favourite migration camps across the Serengeti, not only because of its stargazing tent design, but also because of its incredible guiding quality and service level.

  Opened in 2018, Lemala Nanyukie matches the same outstanding standards as the other properties in Lemala’s luxury collection. Meaning ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language, the Serengeti is one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas. Lemala Nanyukie is located just a 60-minute drive from the airstrip in the park’s central region. It’s both accessible and exclusive in its own area in the eastern Serengeti. This area was closed to the public for over 10 years during a cheetah repopulation initiative. Now it’s open, only two major camps sit in this area so your game drives will feel very private. And after its successful project, it’s one of the best areas for big cats – cheetah in particular. The camp sits on a grassy savannah dotted with rocky kopjes and shaded by ancient giant acacia trees. Lemala Nanyukie is open year-round, and safari activities like game drives and walks will be accompanied by Lemala’s highly experienced guides.   As part of the Nomad portfolio, Lamai is a beautiful and loved safari camp in the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania. The camp sits on the Lamai Wedge, above the vast savannahs and surrounded by a collection of giant boulders. The design is fitting with its surroundings – as neutral colours, tones and textures are used to compliment the natural kopjes. The camp is formed of eight rooms, each with large ensuite bathrooms, private verandas and expansive views across the plains. For the communal areas, there is a swimming pool, a natural rock deck offering a great viewpoint, and open air and indoor dining areas. Of course Nomad wouldn’t be as highly regarded and rated as it is without their particularly great safari guides, staff members and managers who keeps everything at Lamai running smoothly.   Sayari Camp Overview
  Overlooking the game-filled plains, Sayari Camp is situated in the north of the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania. Between the months of June and October, the wildebeest migration herds will be up in this area, feeding on green pasture before taking their opportunity to cross the Mara River. The benefit of being in a camp like Sayari is that the guides will know where the herds are every day and will have a greater insight into when they will make that river crossing and at which crossing point. The camp itself was just redesigned and now offers an even more luxurious and contemporary feel to it. Each of the 15 suites have walk-in showers, free-standing outdoor baths, beautiful décor and private verandas. In addition, the main area offers an inviting pool, set between natural rock formations, an Asilia Spa and an innovative solar-powered micro-brewery. This is the first in the bush!
Days 6 - 9
Zanzibar Island
After five days of exhilarating safari, you will fly across to Zanzibar Island to spend four nights relaxing on the white sand beaches. The island is beautiful in so many ways – from the enticing spice plantations to the azure waters that sparkle under the African sun. You will spend four nights in Kono Kono which offers a variety of room types and villas. Whether you wake up amongst the tropical gardens or facing the ocean from the beach pavilions, it is a great place to be based while you explore the island. There are plenty of excursions to enjoy across the island, as well as watersports like snorkeling, diving, and dhow sunset trips.

This main area also features a restaurant, a bar and plenty of comfortable outdoor lounge areas to sunbathe, relax or enjoy a sundowner from.   Situated on the beautiful beaches of Paje in eastern Zanzibar, is White Sands Villas. This is one of the most private resorts on the island, as the villas have their own pool, living area and garden space to enjoy. Walk a minute from the villa and you will arrive on a pristine white sand beach (hence the name), looking out to the glistening Indian Ocean. There are 11 luxury villas and 3 Cinnamon rooms, each offering different sizes and number of bedrooms to accommodate groups and families. The resort facilities include an onsite spa, a beach bar, various lounge and outdoor garden spaces, a rooftop champagne bar, and of course, an expansive beach to relax on each day. The décor in the villas and main area is very clean, minimal and inviting. With a small collection of luxury villas, the service, food and attention to detail is really exceptional – one of the best on the islands we’d say.
Day 10
Depart
On your final day, you will explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town. This is the capital city of Zanzibar island and one that is filled with history and culture. You will be transferred to Stone Town in the morning to enjoy a historic walking tour with a private guide. En route, you will visit sites like the House of Wonders, the Former Slave Market, the Freddie Mercury House, the Old Fort, and the Forodhani Garden and Market area. There is plenty of atmosphere to soak up before you are transferred to the international airport, where you will fly home.
