Paro is home to Bhutan’s only international airport but more importantly also houses the iconic Taktsang Palphug Monastery, best known as the Tiger’s Nest.
Sitting at a lower elevation, the Punakha Valley is warmer and greener, and known for the stunning Punakha Dzong – possibly the most beautiful in all of Bhutan.
Gangtey sits at the bottom of the stark, glacial Phobjikha Valley. The idyllic village is your base for gorgeous hikes around the valley floor and lush surrounding forests.
Heading further east, the four valleys of Bhumtang complete a wider and more immersive circuit of Bhutan, and are known for their handicrafts and textiles.
West of Thimphu and Paro, reached via the winding, epic Chele Le Pass, this serene and less-explored region is known for its natural beauty and untouched culture.

Time your visit to one of Bhutan’s famous festivals. Known as “Tshechus,” these gatherings bring communities together in vibrant, colorful re-tellings of religious myth and lore, attracting audiences of both locals and international visitors alike. Many of the biggest festivals time ideally with the preferred spring and fall times of the year.
The Tiger’s Nest, or Taktsang Monastery, is Bhutan’s iconic cliffside temple. The hike takes around three hours up, and two hours down, and is moderately challenging yet spiritually rewarding, leading you through through lush forests to this sacred site, perched 900 meters above the Paro Valley.
These distinctive Bhutanese architectural complexes, found in every major town and valley, combine a fortress and a monastery. Typically constructed with stone, dzongs serve as religious, administrative, and defensive centers. Featuring intricate woodwork, whitewashed walls, and towering structures, they embody Bhutan’s heritage while also serving as seats of local government.
