Best activities in Bhutan

We offer a broad range of tours and activities across Bhutan, catering to all tastes and interests. We’ve picked our just a few of our favourites below. This is just the tip of the iceberg though: let us know what excites you most about Bhutan, and we’ll map out the perfect itinerary.

Bhutan's Festivals

Bhutan’s festivals, known as “Tshechus,” are held throughout the year in different regions of Bhutan, bringing communities together and attracting locals and visitors worldwide.

People gather in their finest traditional attire to witness masked dances, known as “Cham,” performed by trained monks and local villagers, which depict various religious stories, legends, and spiritual teachings. The performers wear elaborate costumes and mesmerizing masks, each representing a different deity or character.

The festivals are a visual spectacle and a profoundly spiritual experience. They provide an opportunity for Bhutanese people to express devotion, seek blessings, and accumulate merit. The air is filled with traditional music, prayers, and chanting, creating a joyful and sacred atmosphere. Tshechus also serve as important social events where families and friends reconnect and enjoy the festivities.

The Tiger's Nest Hike

The hike to the breathtaking Taktsang Palphug Monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest, is the most iconic trek in Bhutan.  The moderately challenging trail winds through a pine forest, offering glimpses of the monastery amidst the trees as you climb. The gentle sounds of prayer flags fluttering in the wind accompany you as you ascend, and then the final stretch heads out from the forests and involves climbing stone steps that take you to the monastery.

Once inside, explore the various temple halls and sacred chambers, with their intricate murals and statues, but the true magic of this place is seeing its location up close and admiring the views.

As you descend, take a moment to appreciate the views of the surrounding pristine, forest-clad mountains and valleys. The Tiger’s Nest Hike is not just about reaching a destination; it’s about immersing yourself in Bhutan’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and spirituality.

Spot the Black-Necked Crane

For Birders, Bhutan is a paradise. Hunting is Banned in Bhutan as it is a Buddhist nation. So, birds such as the Khaleej pheasant, Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, and Himalayan Monal which are usually finicky and shy, are abundant here.

The incredibly rare and endangered, Black-Necked Cranes migrate to the Phobjikha Valley during the winter months (October to February), making Bhutan one of the few places in the world where you can see them in their natural but protected habitat.

The best place to see them is the Gangteng Conservation Area. As you explore the broad, shallow valley, look for their distinctive black necks, white feathers, and red crowns. They can be found gracefully wading in the marshy wetlands or soaring through the skies above. You may also spot wild boar, leopard, barking deer, and Himalayan Brown Bear.

The Black-Necked Cranes also hold cultural significance in Bhutanese folklore and are considered sacred by the locals. Pairs are said to mate for life, and that, together with their graceful mating dance, has made them seen as a symbol of true love. Each year, their arrival is celebrated with the Black-Necked Crane Festival, where traditional dances, music, and rituals pay homage to their presence.

Trekking in the Bhutan Himalaya

With its pristine forests, rugged mountains, and beautiful valleys, Bhutan offers a range of trekking options for both seasoned hikers and beginners. One of the most popular trekking routes is the Druk Path Trek, which takes you through alpine meadows, past serene lakes, and ancient monasteries. Another iconic trek is the Jomolhari Trek, renowned for its stunning views of Mount Jomolhari and encounters with remote villages and nomadic yak herders. For a short, day trek, don’t miss out on the Tiger’s Nest Monastery.  Snow-capped peaks, waterfalls, and colorful rhododendron forests surround Bhutan’s trails. You might spot rare wildlife like the Snow Leopard or the Himalayan Monal. However, you’ll definitely encounter ancient monasteries, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and friendly locals, providing insights into Bhutan’s rich Buddhist heritage and traditional way of life. Whether you opt for a short trek or an extended expedition, the Bhutan Himalaya promises an incredible adventure.

Sample Bhutanese cuisine

Sampling the cuisine is essential to immersing yourself in any country’s culture. With its unique flavors, vibrant colors, and distinct use of spices, Bhutanese cuisine offers an unforgettable culinary adventure for food enthusiasts.  The Bhutanese are known for their love of chili, which you’ll find adding a fiery kick to many dishes. Start your gastronomic journey by trying the national dish, Ema Datshi, a spicy chili and cheese stew that packs a punch. Take advantage of other Bhutanese specialties like Jasha Maroo (spicy chicken stew), Phaksha Paa (pork with radishes), and Kewa Datshi (potato and cheese stew).

Bhutanese cuisine also celebrates seasonal ingredients, and exploring the local markets and street stalls will introduce you to a variety of these, such as ferns, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots, as well as traditional snacks such as momos (dumplings), goep (buckwheat pancakes), and khur-le (fried noodles). Wash it all down with Ara, a traditional rice wine, or Suja, a butter tea popular among locals. Zumzin, Bhutanese peach wine, is quite an interesting innovation brewed by the military distillery and a must-try for dessert wine fans.

Relax in a hot stone bath

This unique therapeutic experience is deeply rooted in Bhutanese culture and promotes relaxation, alleviates muscle tension, and improves overall well-being. Immerse in a wooden tub filled with mineral-rich hot water infused with medicinal herbs and aromatic oils. Smooth river stones, heated over an open fire, are then added to the bath, releasing their warmth and therapeutic properties. The heat from the rocks seeps into your body, soothing tired muscles, and the herbal infusion and the heat of the stones work together to promote relaxation and detoxification. Hot stone baths are often offered at traditional farmhouses and many resorts across the country, allowing you to enjoy this tranquil experience amidst diverse and serene landscapes.  It’s a relaxing practice that connects you with nature and rejuvenates both body and mind, leaving you thoroughly refreshed and revitalized.
