When to visit Bhutan

Landlocked in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan’s climate is influenced by mountainous terrain, resulting in distinct seasonal variations throughout the year.

Spring (March to May) brings mild temperatures and colorful blossoms, making it an ideal time to witness Bhutan’s vibrant flora and fauna. The weather is generally pleasant, with occasional showers, and is perfect for trekking and wildlife spotting.

Summer (June to August) is the monsoon season, characterized by heavy rainfall and occasional fog. While the weather may be wet, the landscapes come alive during this time, and the countryside is at its most vibrant. It’s a great time to visit as the valleys fill with greenery, and the rice terraces are in full bloom.

Autumn (September to November) is the best time to visit Bhutan. The skies are blue and the temperatures are mild, making it perfect for trekking and exploring the country’s cultural offerings. It is also the season for many of the major festivals.

Winter (December to February) brings colder temperatures, especially in higher altitudes, with occasional snowfall, but the lower valleys enjoy mild and sunny weather. There are fewer tourists and stunning mountain vistas covered in snow. It’s an ideal time for cultural sightseeing, visiting monasteries, and enjoying Bhutan’s hot stone baths.

Bhutan season-by-season

Bhutan is a fascinating destination and has much to offer at any time of year. We’ve put together an overview of climate season – by – season

Spring

Spring in Bhutan (March to May) showcases the country’s natural beauty at its finest. As winter recedes, the landscape comes alive with vibrant colors and blooming flowers. The weather is generally mild and pleasant, with temperatures gradually rising as the season progresses.

One of the highlights of spring in Bhutan is the abundance of rhododendrons in full bloom, painting the hillsides with pink, red, and white hues. It’s a spectacular sight, especially in the forests and valleys. The clear skies and mild temperatures make it an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking and trekking.

Spring is also a festive season in Bhutan, with numerous religious and cultural celebrations. The most renowned festival during this time is the Paro Tsechu, where locals and visitors come together to witness vibrant masked dances, traditional music performances, and religious rituals.

During springtime, one can see the unfurling of Thongdrel, a large applique Thangka at the beginning of Paro Tsechu at Paro Dzong.

Summer

From June to August, summer brings lush greenery, occasional rain showers, and a unique charm to the country. While it is the monsoon season, the weather is generally warm and humid, with bursts of rain contributing to the country’s dramatic landscapes. The countryside is adorned with vibrant flora, with blooming flowers and cascading waterfalls creating a picturesque environment, and the rice terraces glisten in the sunlight after a refreshing downpour.

The valleys and forests come alive with abundant wildlife, making it a perfect time for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts. The national parks and protected areas become havens for various species, including the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal.

Summer is also ideal for witnessing traditional festivals like the Haa Summer Festival and the Nimalung Tsechu. These festivals showcase Bhutanese culture, masked dances, and religious rituals, offering a unique insight into the country’s rich heritage.

Fall

The Fall months from September to November mark the second high season in Bhutan. Tourist numbers are generally slightly lower during these months, but visiting in Fall offers several advantages.

The weather is mild and clear, perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing, with excellent visibility of the Himalayan mountains. The landscapes are lush from summer rains and adorned with autumn colors, ideal for photography. It’s also a fantastic time of year for trekking, with popular routes such as the Druk Path and the Jomolhari Trek offering breathtaking views.

In addition to offering a prime climate, the Fall months also host major festivals like Thimphu Tshechu and Jambay Lhakhang Drup, which showcase traditional dances and vibrant costumes. Gangtey and the Phobjikha Valley also witness the famous Black Crane festival, marking the arrival of this rare and beautiful bird from Tibet.

Winter

From December to February, winter is a season of clear skies, crisp mountain air, and snow-capped peaks, creating a picturesque winter wonderland.  Unlike some high-altitude countries and regions, the winter in Bhutan is easily bearable, with average temperatures ranging from -3 to 12 degrees. While it is colder, especially in higher elevations, the snow-clad landscapes transform the country and offer spectacular views of the Himalayan mountain ranges.  The clear skies offer excellent visibility down in the lower reaches, making it a perfect time for panoramic views and capturing stunning photographs of the Dzongs along each valley. The main destinations of Paro, Punakha, and Thimpu are spectacular during this time, as are treks in the lower reaches.

The festivals during this time are the Punakha Drubchen and the Paro Tshechu, where locals and visitors come together to witness masked dances, traditional music performances, and religious rituals.
