When to visit Bhutan

From June to August, summer brings lush greenery, occasional rain showers, and a unique charm to the country. While it is the monsoon season, the weather is generally warm and humid, with bursts of rain contributing to the country’s dramatic landscapes. The countryside is adorned with vibrant flora, with blooming flowers and cascading waterfalls creating a picturesque environment, and the rice terraces glisten in the sunlight after a refreshing downpour.

The valleys and forests come alive with abundant wildlife, making it a perfect time for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts. The national parks and protected areas become havens for various species, including the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal.

Summer is also ideal for witnessing traditional festivals like the Haa Summer Festival and the Nimalung Tsechu. These festivals showcase Bhutanese culture, masked dances, and religious rituals, offering a unique insight into the country’s rich heritage.

From December to February, winter is a season of clear skies, crisp mountain air, and snow-capped peaks, creating a picturesque winter wonderland.  Unlike some high-altitude countries and regions, the winter in Bhutan is easily bearable, with average temperatures ranging from -3 to 12 degrees. While it is colder, especially in higher elevations, the snow-clad landscapes transform the country and offer spectacular views of the Himalayan mountain ranges.  The clear skies offer excellent visibility down in the lower reaches, making it a perfect time for panoramic views and capturing stunning photographs of the Dzongs along each valley. The main destinations of Paro, Punakha, and Thimpu are spectacular during this time, as are treks in the lower reaches.

The festivals during this time are the Punakha Drubchen and the Paro Tshechu, where locals and visitors come together to witness masked dances, traditional music performances, and religious rituals.
