Where to start? Asia is incredibly diverse: travelers can experience everything from the ancient history of Cambodia to the modern vibrancy of Japan, the mysticism of India, and the sultry tropical beauty of Indonesia. Landscapes encompass stunning beaches, majestic mountains, lush jungles, vast deserts, and neon-drenched cities. The Great Wall of China, Angkor Wat, and the Taj Mahal take the headlines, but there are staggering historical sites around every corner.

Adventure, serenity, stunning accommodation, and faultless hospitality are par for the course. And the food – oh, the food – will change your life. Back home after one trip, you’ll happily travel a day to find authentic nasi lemak or tonkotsu ramen. Speaking from personal experience, what may start as a curiosity will quickly turn into an obsession, and you’ll find this compelling continent drawing you back time and time, and time, again: Asia is ever-surprising, ever-changing, and forever thrilling.

Best time to visit Asia

Asia covers almost half the planet and spans the full spectrum of environments and landscapes…so the best time to visit depends on where you are looking to go, and what kind of adventure you have in mind. Tropical Asia (ThailandCambodia, Laos, VietnamMalaysia, Sri Lanka, and much of India) is at its best in the cooler and drier winter months between October and April. Points further north (Japan, South Korea) or at higher elevations (Nepal, Bhutan) are best in the spring or fall months: February to May or September to November. Spanning either side of the Equator, the many islands of Indonesia and the steamy jungles of Borneo are best through our summer months of April to October.

What to do in Asia

Here is just a snapshot of what adventures and unique experiences are possible across the continent:

  • Dinner with a geisha in Kyoto

The Gion is Kyoto’s traditional heart: a network of tight cobbled streets lined with wooden machiya houses and stores…and an entrance into the world of the geisha. Embark on a walking tour of the district, culminating in an elaborate kaiseki dinner that showcases Kyoto’s finest culinary culture.

  • Track tigers in India

India boasts a vibrant tapestry of flora and fauna, populated by rhinos, gharial, deer, and a mesmeric array of birdlife…but the majestic Bengal tiger reigns supreme. Across national parks like Ranthambore, Kanha, and Jim Corbett, experience the enchanting wilderness first-hand, tracking these elusive creatures in their natural habitat.

  • Sunset cruise in Krabi

Cruise along the stunning Andaman Sea in exclusive comfort, savoring breathtaking views of turquoise waters, karst peaks, and pristine white-sand beaches as the sun dips below the horizon. Enjoy stops to swim and snorkel at your leisure, as well as a sumptuous picnic dinner.

  • Breakfast tour of Phnom Penh

This immersive morning tour takes you through bustling local markets and small street-side stands in neighborhoods outside the usual tourist circuit. You’ll see another side of the Cambodian capital when you sit with locals for traditional breakfast treats and sample street vendors’ savory morning snacks.

  • Meet Komodo dragons

In a country of endlessly striking scenery, Komodo may be the most staggering. Explore the Park on a chartered speedboat or overnight ‘phinisi’ cruise, where you’ll face the famous Komodo dragons, hike to the peak of Padar island, and swim and snorkel off pink sand beaches.

  • Experience a tsechu in Bhutan

A true bucket list experience, time your visit to Bhutan with ‘tsechu’ season: vibrant religious festivals marked by colorful masked dances, rowdy music, and auspicious ceremonies. Taking a central part in the social calendar, these events are integral to Bhutanese culture, fostering community spirit and spiritual devotion.

Your Asia questions answered

What destinations are in Asia?

Travelers tend to cover Asia in three distinct regions. East Asia is comprised of Japan, North and South Korea, China, and Taiwan: all very different cultures, but all influenced by a backbone of the reverent, Confucian tradition. South East Asia covers the former French ‘Indochina’ region:  Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, plus Thailand. Also included however are Myanmar (formerly Burma), Malaysia (plus Malaysian Borneo), Indonesia, the Philippines, and the tiny nations of Brunei and East Timor. The Indian subcontinent stretches from the Himalayan kingdoms of Nepal and Bhutan, through India and Bangladesh, and down to the magical isle of Sri Lanka

Why should I travel to Asia?

There’s a reason why travelers have seen Asia as a rite of passage for centuries. Quite simply, it is the world’s most exotic, eclectic, and rewarding region. From Seoul to Singapore to Sri Lanka, Asia is jam-packed with buzzing multicultural cities, pristine white sandy beaches, dense tropical jungles, mesmerizing history, and a fascinating rainbow of modern cultures and customs. Thanks to its incredible people, hospitality is first-rate and – best of all – fantastic value, with top-class luxury accommodation roughly half the price of Europe or North America.

What are the key experiences in Asia?

Where to start? Iconic historical sites, such as Cambodia’s Angkor Wat or Indonesia’s Borobudur are a must. Astonishing landscapes like Vietnam’s Halong Bay, Bali’s UNESCO-protected rice terraces, or the rolling tea hills of Sri Lanka. Cities range from multicultural metropolises such as Tokyo or Singapore to atmospheric gems like Chiang Mai or former Laotian capital Luang Prabang. The best thing about a customized tour of Asia is that all of these experiences can be included in just one action-packed tour. And we haven’t even mentioned the food…

When is the best time to travel to Asia?

Like most tropical destinations, the core Southeast Asia destinations – Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka – experience three seasons: dry, hot, and wet. The best time for most parts is the drier months between October and April. In Borneo and Indonesia, the seasonality is flipped, with the rains arriving during the northern hemisphere winter and the best weather from March through to November. Japan has a much cooler climate, in which the spring and fall months are best for travel. There are many microclimates within the region, so please speak to your consultant for the best advice.

What is food in Asia like?

Incredible! Experiencing the cuisine is such an integral part of any customized tour of Asia. With so many different cultures and ethnicities present, and such a vibrant and varying basket of ingredients to draw from, you’ll sample a world of delights during your trip. Dishes are typically based around rice (often sticky rice) or noodles, accompanied by delicately balanced and coconut-milk-rich curries, charcoal-grilled meats and seafood, tangy and spicy soups and salads, and a rainbow of fiery dips and sauces on the side.
