This itinerary features the gems of Zambia’s safari parks. After a few days enjoying the iconic Victoria Falls at Tongabezi Lodge, you will fly across to the Lower Zambezi National Park to spend 5 nights on a luxury safari. With the mighty Zambezi River the main attraction to the park, you can enjoy a variety of safari activities here including day and night game drives, walking safaris, canoe and boat safaris, and tiger fishing. After the Lower Zambezi, you’ll head to the South Luangwa to spend a few days in Puku Ridge – the sister camp of Chiawa.

Day by Day Itinerary

DAY 1
Arrive in Livingstone, Victoria Falls
You will be met on arrival in Livingstone international airport and transferred to the luxury boutique lodge called Tongabezi. Livingstone (named after David Livingstone), is next door to one of the world’s Natural Wonders, Victoria Falls. While many of the hotels are next to the falls, the benefit of Tongabezi is it is further down the river, offering a little paradise to the start of your Zambia safari.

  Ilala Lodge Overview
  Located on the Zimbabwean side of the mighty Victoria Falls is Ilala Lodge. It is one of the closest lodges to Victoria Falls – which itself is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The lodge comprises of 73 rooms, each offering comfortable bedrooms and well-appointed ensuite bathrooms. There is a range of room types in different wings and we can advise on which room type would be best suited for you. The décor features local Zimbabwean crafts and materials, and there is a relaxed atmosphere to the lodge. During your time here in Zimbabwe, there is plenty to do. Of course, make sure you spend a day visiting Victoria Falls and for those more adventurous, there are plenty of adrenaline-fuelled activities like white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and helicopter flights over the falls. These can be pre-arranged by us, or through Ilala Lodge on arrival.
Day 2 - 4
Chiawa Camp, Lower Zambezi National Park
In the morning you will be transferred to Livingstone airport to fly into the Lower Zambezi National Park. Your safari guide will meet you at the airstrip and you will begin your safari through the park on route to Chiawa Camp. On route, you’ll see a host of animals including elephant, buffalo, antelope, big cats and a huge variety of birdlife. The Lower Zambezi National Park features the mighty Zambezi River which runs between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The main draw to this park is that there are so many safari activities to do here including day and night game drives, walking safaris, boat safaris, canoe safaris, and catch-and-release fishing. Chiawa Camp is a luxury tented camp and offers an intimate and exceptional safari experience.
Day 5 - 6
Old Mondoro, Lower Zambezi National Park
After Chiawa Camp, you will be transferred to its sister camp – Old Mondoro. This camp is small and intimate, with only four safari chalets. Sitting in a winterthorn grove, Old Mondoro is famous for the amount of wildlife that often walks through the camp – elephant, buffalo, antelope, warthog, and sometimes sightings of big cats. The camp has also had some more unusual and nocturnal sightings like honey badgers and pangolins.

  Old Mondoro
  Old Mondoro is one of the most iconic camps in all of southern Africa but with only 5 chalets, availability is always a little challenging. The camp is located amongst a winter thorn forest in the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia. The camp has no fences and, as it’s situated in one of the most prolific wildlife areas in the park, it regularly gets animals like herds of elephant or antelope walking through camp, past your chalet and open-air bathroom. The word ‘mondoro’ in the local language means lion. While there are fantastic lion prides and sightings nearby, Old Mondoro has a reputation for its more unusual and rare sightings, such as aardvark and the aggressive honey badger. These are two species that are on the top of the list for every safari enthusiast. Old Mondoro is owned by the Cumings family, with sister properties being Chiawa Camp (also in the Lower Zambezi) and Puku Ridge in the South Luangwa National Park. Game viewing from Old Mondoro really is one of the best in Zambia – if not all of Africa – and the best thing is that you can enjoy it by vehicle, boat, or on foot.

Owned by the Cumings family, Chiawa Camp was the first to set up in this park and today, with an exceptional guiding team and a creative and friendly group of staff, it offers one of the best safari experiences in all of Zambia. For us, it put a whole new meaning on the safari experience in southern Africa, excelling so much of what we have experienced already. Activities from Chiawa Camp include day and night game drives (with red light filter spotlights), walking safaris, canoe trips, river safaris, and catch and release tiger fishing. We’d recommend at least 4-5 nights in the Lower Zambezi so that you can experience it all. The camp also has a photographic hide called the Scouts Hollow which is sat on the banks of the Zambezi River. This is an exceptional viewpoint, giving you the opportunity to see elephants, buffalo, antelope, big cats, and an array of bird life on the river.
Day 7 - 10
Puku Ridge, South Luangwa National Park
This morning you will be transferred to the airstrip to fly north to the South Luangwa National Park. These two parks complement each other well as the Lower Zambezi is focused on the water (with a strong focus on boat and canoe safaris), the South Luangwa is much drier and vast. Here, you can enjoy four days of game viewing by vehicle (both day and night game drives) or by foot. The camp itself is sister to Chiawa, and has recently been renovated. It offers a luxury safari feel, with private verandas, plunge pools and star decks.

Departure
