Horse riding safaris in Kenya

Although the most conventional way to see wildlife in Africa is on a safari vehicle (called a game drive), a horseback safari is a unique and thrilling way to see wild animals in their natural habitat. Not only do you get a different perspective for game viewing, you also get the additional benefit of enjoying a riding holiday in itself. The best thing is that there are different options for riding in Kenya based on your ability and experience. This guide gives you a little insight into the different places you can ride in Kenya.

Offbeat Safaris

When it comes to horseback riding in Kenya, Offbeat is certainly one of the first to consider. Offbeat Safaris specialize in experienced riding, and offer safaris across the Masai Mara National Reserve, the Laikipia Plateau, and Amboseli National Park in central and southern Kenya. Established in 1990, Offbeat offers professional experience, great horses, guides, and staff. Accommodation is in mobile tented camps, offering an authentic experience, and on route, you will get the chance to see big game while on an Africann hose. Offbeat Safaris are for experienced riders.

Sosian Lodge

Located in the Laikipia Plateau, Sosian Lodge is a favorite of ours in this area. The lodge offers a ranch-like environment, and sits on an impressive 24,000 acres of private land. Sosian offers the conventional safari activities, like day and night game drives and walking safaris. It also offers some more unique experiences like waterfall jumping, kayaking, fly camping, and camel rides. When it comes to horse riding, it’s one of the best places in East Africa. Sosian offers two different types of horse safaris. The first is you can do a ride from the lodge as a morning or afternoon activity, which lasts around 2-3 hours. The other is that you can do an extended horseback safari, where you can spend around 5-7 days enjoying a horseback safari.

Ol Malo Lodge

Ol Malo sits in the Laikipia Plateau, and offers some of the most breathtaking views across all of Kenya. The lodge itself is incredibly well designed, with a classic and authentic safari feel to them. Life at Ol Malo is all about the experiences, and horse riding is certainly one of them. On your ride, you’ll get the chance to see animals like antelope, giraffe, and zebra among others. In the evening, you can enjoy the comfort of the lodge, or head out to the mobile camp, meeting local Samburu people, exploring the Suguta valley and sleeping under the stars in the process.

Ol Donyo Lodge

Ol Donyo Lodge is part of the Great Plains portfolio, so you can guarantee exceptional guiding, food, service, and all-round safari experience. The lodge is situated between Kenya’s Tsavo National Park and Amboseli National Park. In the heart of the Chyulu Hills, it feels like you have an entire savannah to yourself. Ol Donyo offers a wealth of safari activities including bush walks, game drives, biking, and of course, horse riding. Amateur riders can enjoy a hour-long ride across the open plains, but a short assessment in the resident area is required to make sure that both the rider and the guide are comfortable. For more experienced riders, you can enjoy a longer ride across the foothills of Chyulu Hills, with up to 4 hours admiring abundant wildlife.
