The 50 Most Searched For Bucket List Travel Experiences

Over the last year holidays have been majorly scaled back, and we’ve instead indulged in more simple and local pleasures. But, those big ‘bucket list’ yearnings are hard to let go of aren’t they?

A year of travel bans has only fuelled our wanderlust: the thought of Angkor Wat, Banff National Park and the Great Barrier Reef is more enticing than ever.

If a year at home has taught people anything about travel, it is to stop putting off those big, once-in-a-lifetime trips.

And with travel starting to open up, it got us thinking. When people are free to travel wherever, whenever, where in the world do they actually want to go?

The team at Unforgettable Travel have found out exactly that. We used global search data to track which bucket list experiences we’ve all been searching for, and therefore can reveal where in the world people are yearning to discover the most…

The 50 Most Searched For Bucket List Travel Experiences

Between them, the top 50 bucket list travel experiences have an average of almost 175,000 global searches each month. And the most searched for? The tallest building in the world.

That’s right. The most searched for bucket list travel experience is a trip to the top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Being able to host up to 35,000 people at once, the world’s tallest freestanding structure is often referred to as a Vertical City. And with 10,000 searches a month for ‘Burj Khalifa tickets’, people are certainly keen to explore its 160 storeys.

So without further ado, these are the top 50 most searched for bucket list travel experiences in the world…

!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,(function(e){if(void 0!==e.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var t=document.querySelectorAll(“iframe”);for(var a in e.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var r=0;r<t.length;r++){if(t[r].contentWindow===e.source)t[r].style.height=e.data[“datawrapper-height”][a]+”px”}}}))}();

After a year of being cooped up inside, people are yearning for the great outdoors, with six challenging hikes featuring in the top 50 list: Everest Base Camp, Machu Picchu, Mount Kilimanjaro, Havasu Falls, Trolltunga and Table Mountain.

And when it comes to the location, Europe features heavily in the list, securing 19 out of the 50 top spots and across a range of experiences including art, history, adventure and even partying!

So that got us thinking again, what are the ten most popular bucket list travel experiences in each continent?

Africa

As one of the world’s most diverse continents, it’s a surprise that there are not more African bucket list experiences on the top 50 list but those that are, are pretty spectacular. So, what experiences are people yearning for in the vast continent?

A thrill-seeker’s paradise perhaps, with half of the top ten being adrenaline-inducing experiences. These include four challenging hikes: Mount Kilimanjaro, Table Mountain and Mount Kenya, as well as Gorilla trekking in Uganda. Even more hair-raising is bungee jumping off of Victoria Falls Bridge.

Asia

20% of the top 50 list was secured by experiences across Asia and the world’s biggest continent is also home to the overall winner, the Burj Khalifa. But where else is igniting people’s wanderlust?

Romantic experiences are proving popular in Asia, with marvelling at the breathtaking Taj Mahal, enjoying the pink hues of Japan’s cherry blossom season and watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat all featuring in the top ten.

Europe

Europe accounts for 38% of the top 50 list so it’s clear that Europe is home to some incredible bucket list experiences. But which ones are people wanting to visit the most?

Taking the top spot is Paris’ iconic landmark, the Eiffel Tower, with ‘Eiffel Tower tickets’ having the most monthly searches.

The UK secured three of the top ten positions, with its world-famous Glastonbury Festival and the London Marathon, as well as watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

North America

North America is another popular destination, taking almost a quarter of the top 50 list (24%). But what are the top ten most searched for in the vast continent?

Interestingly, four of North America’s top ten list involve some form of travel: driving across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, witnessing the Grand Canyon in a helicopter, taking a road trip down the famous Route 66 and of course, the boat to go inside the Statue of Liberty.

Oceania

Oceania is one of the most remote continents in the world, which could be why it only accounted for 6% of the top 50 most searched for bucket list travel experiences.

Included in the top list was experiencing the world’s largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef, and the lush rolling hills of The Shire at Hobbiton.

South America

South America is a traveller’s dream with several wonders of the world found across the continent, so it’s a surprise that only 6% of the top 50 list were in this continent. So, let’s shine a light on the top ten most popular bucket list travel experiences.

South America boasts some of the most diverse landscapes in the world and it’s clear that these are piquing interest, with the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni, the baron San Pedro de Atacama desert, the volcanic Easter Island, and the world’s largest rainforest the Amazon all featuring on the list.

Methodology

We created a list of the most popular bucket list travel experiences from around the world, which were taken from several high-quality articles and sources listing must-do bucket list experiences.

Using Ahrefs, we then found the average monthly global search volume for common search terms associated with each specific bucket list experience, such as ‘[experience] tours’, ‘[experience] tickets’ and ‘[experience] trips’. The most searched for phrase was then used as the figure for the specific experience.

To keep things as consistent as possible, we searched for the most simple related verb for non-ticketed/tour experiences, e.g. ‘Everest base camp trek’, ‘Raja Ampat diving’ and ‘Banff National Park camping’, and again used the most searched phrases.

The global search volume data used shows how many times per month, on average, people search for the target keyword across all countries.

Data correct as of June 2021.
