Best Time to Visit Vietnam

While Vietnam may be a small country, it’s also very diverse when it comes to its geography, which means there is really no “wrong” time to visit, with the weather different depending on the destination you’re in.

Generally, many feel the best time to visit the northern region is from March through May or late September and October, when you’ll be spared from the sizzling peak of summer heat as well as cold winter downpours. If you plan to visit the southern region, December through April is optional as unlike the north, consistently warm temperatures can be enjoyed here year-round, with the highest around 93 degrees Fahrenheit during February and March. The central region has a more coastal climate, with heavy rain in October and November, while May and August are some of the hottest months of the year.

November - March

Winter/High Season

November through March are the driest months of the year. While Central Vietnam may experience some rain, the majority of the country will be warm and dry. December is the peak of the tourist season due to the Christmas holidays, so you’ll need to book accommodation, tickets and airfare well in advance if you plan to visit this month. Be aware that in the north, the weather will be chilly in January. Average daytime temperatures can reach 95 degrees Fahrenheit in Hanoi but may dip all the way down to a pleasant 72 degrees.

This is a great time to visit Vietnam if you want to enjoy the south coast beaches and islands like Phu Quoc. If you come in March, Hoi An and Halong Bay will be lovely too. You may want to plan your visit so that you can take part in the Vietnamese New Year celebrations in February, with dragon and lion dances, fireworks, and a wealth of delicious foods.

April - May & September - October

Spring & Fall/Shoulder Season

While temperatures are rising, especially in May, mid-to late-spring can be a good time to come. You’ll likely see plenty of sunny skies, but you’ll want to prepare for rain by bringing a light poncho or buying one when you arrive. The farther south you go, the steamier the weather will be, with temperatures up to 90 degrees. In Hanoi and around Halong Bay, the humidity will be high, but the temperatures will be lower, typically from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit.

After autumn rolls around, late September and October, bring cooler temperatures with dry days. October is one of the best months to visit Vietnam, with Hanoi averaging around 85 degrees. This is also the time to come to enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival with lion dances and lanterns lighting up the sky.

June - August

Summer/Low Season

While summer is low season, that doesn’t necessarily mean there will be fewer tourists, as many come during school breaks. It will be hot and humid throughout the country, with the rainy season in the south in full swing. Floods are common here which can make it difficult to travel around. The north is wetter and hotter too, making for hazardous hiking. The upside is that it’s a great time for visiting beaches on the central coast near Da Nang and Hoi An.
