Where to go in Kenya
Kenya has so many different destinations, featuring varying landscapes, wildlife and ultimately, experience. The most popular national parks and reserves for safaris are located in the central and southern parts of Kenya. These include the Masai Mara National Reserve which is regarded one of the best safari destinations in all of Africa.
For those who are focused on purely a safari experience, then combining parks like Amboseli, Samburu or Tsavo National Park are a good idea. Although you can combine these parks via road transfers, we would always advise taking a small light aircraft between them. It will save you a considerable amount of time and in itself, offers a unique scenic view from above. Flying over Kenya’s Rift Valley is truly special.
Southern Kenya
Masai Mara National Reserve
Situated in southern Kenya, the Masai Mara is an iconic safari park, drawing visitors with its endless plains and abundant wildlife. Exceptional game viewing, including big cats, is a year-round highlight, while the wildebeest migration from July to November is a breathtaking spectacle.
Southern Kenya
Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park, known as the ‘Land of the Giants,’ boasts large elephant populations, including some of Africa’s largest tuskers. It’s teeming with giraffe, zebra, lion, leopard, and 600+ bird species, with the iconic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli can be a standalone safari or part of an itinerary including Masai Mara or Tsavo National Park.
Central Kenya
Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve, nestled in the Kenyan Rift Valley, promises exceptional safaris and a chance to spot rare species. The renowned Samburu Five, including Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk, and Beisa Oryx, inhabit this arid park. Elephants, lions, leopards, antelope, and occasional wild dogs are also found, often near the Ewaso Nyiro River due to high temperatures.
Central Kenya
The Laikipia Plateau
The vast Laikipia Plateau in central Kenya features conservancies, ranches, and rolling farmlands, with convenient access via airstrips like Lewa, Nanyuki, and Loisaba. While not as wildlife-dense as the Masai Mara, Laikipia offers space, unique experiences, and remote game viewing. Ideal for active travelers and families, the camps and lodges provide a range of activities, from tubing on the Ewaso Nyiro River to quad biking, night drives, and camel riding. Laikipia Plateau boasts some of Kenya’s most stunning views, like those seen from Loisaba Tented Camp.
East Kenya
The Kenyan Coast
Kenya boasts exquisite white-sand beaches along its eastern coast, with Mombasa as the tropical hub. Diani Beach, to the north and south of Mombasa, stands out for its glistening sands and lush surroundings, catering to families, honeymooners, and water sports enthusiasts. Easily combine a Kenya safari with a coastal escape by taking a short flight from a bush airstrip to Mombasa, offering the ideal relaxation after an exciting safari adventure.
Southern Kenya
Nairobi
Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, often serves as the starting or ending point for safari itineraries. Beyond hotel check-ins, the city offers intriguing attractions like the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant rescue program, the Giraffe Center, and the Karen Blixen museum. For a remarkable start, consider staying at Giraffe Manor, one of the world’s most incredible hotels, known for breakfasts with resident giraffes (booking well in advance is essential).
