Where to Go in Malaysia

  • Kuala Lumpur

    The capital city offers many cultural attractions with a mix of colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, massive malls, and markets. There’s no shortage of culinary exploits with diverse eats that range from Malay and Chinese to Indian, Japanese, Thai, and Sumatran that can be sampled in restaurants and both indoor and outdoor markets, including the popular Central Market. A visit to the world’s tallest twin skyscrapers, the Petronas Twin Towers, is a must. Soaring nearly 1,500 feet over the city, a 558-foot-high sky bridge links them and includes a viewing deck where you can gaze out over it all with the one you love.

  • Cameron Highlands

    A favorite highland destination, the Cameron Highlands sit at over 6,500 feet above sea level, offering a cool respite from the heat with incredibly lush scenery that includes mossy forests and sprawling tea plantations, many of which are available for tours. The landscape is blanketed in green, providing scenic walks that lead to waterfalls and there are many other attractions too, like butterfly gardens, and strawberry and honeybee farms. This region is famous for its flora, including roses – you can see them with a visit to Mrs. Robertson’s Rose Garden which sits on a picturesque hillside providing a fabulous view over the valleys below.

  • Penang

    While delicious eats can be found throughout Malaysia, Penang is the food capital. This tropical city offers many culinary delights along with an interesting mix of old and new. There are many diverse cultures while modern developments sit right next to temples, mosques, and historic buildings. Learn more about its history at the 18th-century Fort Cornwallis which includes original cannons, embark on a traditional trishaw for some relaxed sightseeing, and spend time on the coast, home to luxurious resorts, sleepy villages, and stunning beaches like Batu Ferringhi. It’s a top spot for sunsets and boasts soft white sands edged by calm blue waters for swimming.

  • Langkawi

    Located off the country’s northeast country in the Andaman Sea, Langkawi is known as the “Jewel of Kedah.” The archipelago is made up of 99 islands, only two of which are inhabited, Pulau Tuba and Pulau Langkawi which is the most populated and the largest of them all. It’s renowned for its awe-inspiring scenery, complete with picture-perfect powdery white sands, turquoise water, mangrove swamps, and lush jungle. Cascading waterfalls, forest parks, and hot springs can be enjoyed as well. While it hasn’t been overly developed, honeymooners will appreciate the plentiful beach bars, tasty seafood eateries, spas, and lavish beachfront resorts.

 

When to Visit Malaysia

Malaysia enjoys warm temperatures all year round, mostly ranging from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainfall is frequent but typically short-lived, which means plenty of sunshine for taking part in outdoor activities. There is no high and low season, but your destinations still determine the best time to visit. If you plan to travel to the east coast, the optimal time is June through October, while November through March is best for visits to the west coast. For those who want to be here when the crowds are at their thinnest and hotel rates their lowest, consider the transitional months of April or May.
