Luxury Sri Lanka Honeymoons

With miles of golden beaches, spectacular nature, intriguing historic sites, epic hikes, inspiring safaris, beautiful boutique hotels, and delicious cuisine, Sri Lanka’s dishes burst with flavor. This may be a tiny island, but it offers a honeymoon with many opportunities for adventure, culture, and relaxation. Located just off India’s southern coast, on this teardrop-shaped island honeymooners can enjoy powdery sands with calm lagoons just a short drive from Colombo, the capital city. For those who surf or want to learn the sport, there are legendary waves at Weligama for beginners and experienced alike. Whale watching, including the chance to spot the rarely seen blue whale, can be enjoyed here and along other south coast beaches like Dikwella and Mirissa too. On the east coast, there is off-the-beaten-path stretches ideal for secluded sunset strolls.

Exotic wildlife can be seen here too, with everything from elephants in Udawalawe National Park to sloth bears, leopards, and elephants in Yala National Park. There are also crumbling ancient cities, temples, and historic ruins scattered across the island, many of which can be found in the Cultural Triangle. In the central highlands, you can learn about the country’s unique tea heritage at the Ceylon Tea Trails.

Where to Go in Sri Lanka

  • Bentota

If you’re looking for a small town with many upscale boutique hotels, spa treatments, and a wealth of activities, Bentota is a top pick. Enjoy postcard-perfect palm-fringed beaches, calm blue waters for swimming and snorkeling, and abundant marine life. One of the most romantic places to visit, not only can you explore the underwater world, but you can enjoy canoeing, sunset sailing trips, and candlelit dinners by the river or sea. Another option for adventurous couples is to embark on a river safari, cruising deep into the mangroves. You’ll be surrounded by impressive scenery as you watch for wildlife with the one you love.

  • Mirissa

Mirissa offers stunning beauty just east of Galle that includes one of Sri Lanka’s best beaches with the water in shades of brilliant green and blue. Watch the colorful boats bob up and down while palm trees sway in the wind, while the views are picturesque, there are lots to do here. This is a popular spot for dolphin and whale watching, snorkeling, bodyboarding, and surfing. Plus, it’s easy to find a secluded stretch with no one else around when you’re looking for romantic moments too. Yet steps away there are plenty of venues for tasty bites enjoyed with cocktails and other refreshing drinks.

  • Kandy

For those who want to learn about Sri Lanka’s culture, don’t miss a visit to Kandy. The last royal capital of the country and the seat of ancient kings, it managed to preserve its unique culture with many landmark sites. It includes multiple temples like the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a world-renowned temple regarded as Buddhism’s most important religious shrine said to contain a portion of Buddha’s tooth. As you explore the delightfully chaotic yet intriguing streets, you’ll also discover everything from the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue and St. Anthony’s Cathedral, a serene oasis in the city, to beautifully lush gardens.

  • Tangalle

Continuing east from Mirissa in an isolated area four hours from Colombo, you’ll notice that the island becomes increasingly less developed while the scenery just keeps getting better and better. Tangalle is the only major town in the region, ideal for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle while enjoying lots of local amenities and a handful of boutique luxury beachfront resorts. If you envision nearly deserted white sandy beaches with shady palms, turquoise water, and abundant fresh seafood, this is your kind of place. To the east are gorgeous mangrove-lined lagoons and to the west are idyllic bays and coves.

When to Visit Sri Lanka

The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on the destinations you plan to travel to. While it’s a relatively small island, the climate variations can be significant. Its proximity to the equator means it will be warm year-round, but with two annual monsoons, when one side is getting buckets of rain, the other is perfect for beach days. The high season is December through March, optimal for a beach honeymoon, while the shoulder seasons of September/October and April are often ideal throughout Sri Lanka. May through August is the low season with fewer crowds, with the east and north getting the best weather.
