When to visit Austria

May through September is the main tourist season in Austria which are the warmest months of the year with alpine trails that are snow-free for hiking. The three iconic Viennese institutions which include the state opera, the Boys’ Choir, and Spanish Riding School with its Lipizzaner stallions, halt performances in July and August but they can be enjoyed in the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. These periods are also ideal for smaller crowds and a less expensive visit. Winter is chilly but the city’s Christmas markets are magical, and some of the world’s best snow sports can be enjoyed too.

Spring

April and May are another good alternative to the busy summer season with the weather often mild and dry. There’s not a lot of rain now with conditions often ideal for hiking, climbing, biking, and other outdoor activities. Sunshine is abundant while temperatures range around the mid-50s to the upper 60s. If you come now you’ll also avoid the masses and you’ll probably find more affordable airfare and accommodation rates.

Summer

Summer, mid-June through early September, is the high season, which is the busiest, warmest, and most expensive time of year to visit Austria. Temperatures can reach the mid-80s and the days are long with sunset after 8 p.m. It’s a great time to experience the outdoor pools at Prater Park in Vienna as well as to hit the trails in the mountains for hiking and biking. If your main goal is to enjoy sightseeing, you might want to consider another season to avoid the heat, the crowds, and the high prices.

Autumn / Fall

Mid-September through November is a shoulder season, with early autumn a great time to enjoy mild temperatures without the thick summer crowds. It’s also more budget-friendly as compared to the high season, but for the best weather, you’ll want to come between mid-September and mid-October when temperatures are typically in the low to mid-60s. If you want to enjoy brilliant fall colors, plan your visit around the latter half of October.

Winter

Winter in Austria is cold and snowy. Temperatures are often below freezing, but winter sports enthusiasts arrive from across Europe to enjoy the white, powdery snow that makes this country so popular. The ski resorts will be in full swing now with outstanding conditions on the slopes. During the height of the ski season, expect prices to be as high as the Alps while the restaurants and après-ski bars are packed. Still, it’s a magical time of year for those who enjoy an enchanting white wonderland.

Conclusion

There’s a reason to visit Austria in every season, with summer and winter the most popular time to come, the latter of which offers some of the world’s best snow sports while summer is ideal for hiking in the breathtaking Alps. Still, many prefer spring and fall which are less crowded and often bring pleasant weather. With so many diverse experiences, we invite you to choose the best time to visit based on the adventures you’d most like to enjoy.
