What to Do in England

Visiting Stonehenge is on the bucket list of many travelers and a special access tour guided by an archaeologist can bring the site, its story, and mysticism into perspective like nothing else.
Just taking a scenic drive on the winding backroads through The Cotswolds is like a dream, with storybook villages filled with homes and other structures made of honey-hued stone. In Stratford-upon-Avon, you can tour Shakespeare’s home and watch a Royal Shakespeare Company performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. In the northwest corner, the Lake District is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and hikers with its sparkling lakes, forests, and mountains. Staying in a castle is possible too, with many opened as hotels like Thornbury in Gloucestershire where Henry VIII And Anne Boleyn honeymooned during the Middle Ages.
Best activities to do in England
England has a huge range of outdoor pursuits, history, culture, and food to enjoy. To help narrow it down we have put together a list of some of our favorites.
Dinner Cruise on the River Thames
You can’t visit London without enjoying a dinner cruise on the River Thames and this excursion will reveal many of the city’s highlights from the water, including the Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, and the London Eye which will all be illuminated after dark. The elegant Glass Room vessel you’ll be cruising on is spectacular and includes the opportunity for open-air viewing at your leisure. Enjoy it all while dining on a delicious meal, with dishes that include freshly prepared ingredients whipped up by an expert onboard culinary team. A wide range of drink options is available to perfectly complement your meal too. The total experience includes a three-hour cruise, aperitif. and a three-course menu along with a half-bottle of mineral water and a half-bottle of wine per person. Live music is provided throughout your trip featuring the lovely sounds of a soloist and pianist.
See a West End show
The iconic West End of London is a district in the central part of the city north of the River Thames. It hosts many top tourist attractions, shops, and entertainment venues, most notably the West End theaters. The area is renowned as one of the best destinations in the world for catching a show, with a wide range of options for musical theater, comedies, and heart-warming adaptations. Experience the bright lights and glamour in a place that’s been entertaining locals and visitors alike for over 350 years. The shows here are renowned for their exceptional acting and spectacular production and many of the theaters are historic, like the Theatre Royal Drury Lane which opened in 1663 and is still in use today. Shaftesbury Avenue is West End’s most famous street, home to six theaters, including the Lyric Theatre, Apollo Theatre, Palace Theatre, Sondheim Theatre, Gielgud Theatre, and the Shaftesbury Theatre.
Find your favorite Cotswolds village
The picturesque Cotswolds region is the largest of the 38 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England and Wales. An expanse of lush, gently sloping hills and pretty villages looking as if they’ve stepped from the pages of a storybook, it covers 800 miles in Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, stretching into parts of Somerset, Wiltshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire. One of the best ways to enjoy it is with a scenic drive. Choosing your favorite among the many alluring villages isn’t easy, such as the famous Bourton-on-Water which straddles the River Windrush, known for its traditional stone houses and low bridges. Bibury boasts fairytale appeal with River Coln dominating the main street while featuring Arlington Row, a lane of 17th-century sepia-hued cottages originally built for the weavers working at Arlington Mill. Castle Combe is like a dream, complete with a 13th-century church that includes one of the oldest still operating clocks in England.
Relax in the 'spa' town of Bath
Bath isn’t just home to spas and ancient Roman baths, it offers a booming culinary with many specialty food artisans, a foraging school, and farms providing fresh ingredients to the city’s hottest restaurants. One of the best ways to sample it is to meet its “food heroes,” the innovative artisans who are driving the gastronomic scene as well as the city’s legendary food specialties, on a walking food tour. Savor the flavors while learning why Bath is such an important location on the UK food and drink map. Stops at award-winning bakeries, cheesemongers, teahouses, gourmet food shops, and more bring the opportunity to taste everything from scotch eggs and delectable cheeses to fudge all while hearing tales of the city’s culinary heritage and inspiring stories of its artisan suppliers.
Walk the York city walls
York has a fascinating 2,000-year-old history and has been defended by walls since Roman times. Substantial portions still remain, with more miles of intact wall here than in any other city in England. Walking them is one of the top things to do as they encircle the historic center, stretching for two miles. In March or April, you’ll enjoy a spectacular display of daffodils too. Any time of the year, marvel at many significant buildings, fortified gateways, stonework, towers, arrow slits, sculptures, masons’ marks, and gun ports. The section known as the Museum Gardens reveals the best surviving stretch with the Roman tower and its medieval stonework just above. The ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey can be seen with precinct walls around two sides considered the finest surviving example of abbey walls in England, built at the same time the City Walls were constructed, mainly in the 13th century, on top of older earth banks.
Meet 'the Crown' at Windsor Castle and Hampton Court
A visit to Windsor Castle is a must for anyone who wants to get more acquainted with royalty. The 11th-century residence is the longest-occupied palace in Europe and the largest of its kind in the world. You might recall that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding ceremony was held here. The son of Henry V of England and the future Henry VI of England was born here, and Olive Cromwell frequently used it as his headquarters and as a prison for captured Royalists. It sits above the River Thames on 13 acres of impeccably manicured lawns and beautiful gardens, with self-guided audio tours revealing the historic State Apartments that are still used by the Royal Family today. There are many highlights but the most striking may be the Grand Reception room with its sparkling chandeliers, gold-covered walls and ceilings, and malachite urn that was presented to Queen Victoria in 1839.
