Where to go in South Africa

South Africa, a top African tourist destination, boasts numerous safari options within its 19 national parks and around 200 private reserves. The renowned Kruger National Park, surrounded by private reserves like Sabi Sands, stands out. The malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve offers exceptional wildlife encounters. Families favor the Eastern Cape Reserves, also malaria-free and easily accessible. Many visitors combine safaris with exploring South Africa’s other treasures. In the Western Cape, you’ll find Cape Town, Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the Winelands, offering history, outdoor adventures, wine tasting, and beach relaxation.

Sabi Sands Private Reserve

Sabi Sands, among Africa’s top safari destinations, boasts luxurious lodges in a 65,000-hectare reserve with unfenced borders to the main park, ensuring abundant wildlife and remarkable biodiversity. Frequent leopard sightings make it ideal for first-time safari-goers.

Timbavati Private Game Reserve

This private reserve, like Sabi Sands, adjoins Kruger Park, boasting superb game viewing. While leopards are rarer, wild dog sightings are more common. It’s home to rare white lions and offers a quieter, less crowded experience at more budget-friendly lodges, delivering excellent value.

Madikwe Game Reserve

South Africa’s second-largest game reserve is a one-hour flight or five-hour drive from Johannesburg. The 75,000-hectare malaria-free reserve borders Botswana and is lush due to the Marico River and is home to the Big Five (Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Buffalo and Leopard) as well as being known for its Wild Dog and Cheetah sightings. It is a more remote and wild safari than most other reserves in South Africa. Madikwe has a range of luxury lodges catering to families and couples.

Eastern Cape Private Reserves

Easily reachable and malaria-free, Eastern Cape Reserves are a 90-minute drive from Port Elizabeth Airport, or you can opt for a scenic self-drive along the coast from Cape Town. Comprising multiple private reserves with their own lodges, this area offers a somewhat commercial yet enjoyable safari experience. The best weather falls between November and March, aligning with Cape Town’s peak season and coastal beach attractions.

Cape Winelands

The Cape Winelands, just an hour from Cape Town, encompasses Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. This premier wine region in Africa, renowned for award-winning wines, is epitomized by the historic settlement of Franschhoek, founded by French Huguenots in 1688. The picturesque village, nestled among mountains, hosts world-class restaurants and wineries, maintaining its original charm.

Cape Town

Cape Town, often dubbed the world’s most beautiful city, captivates with Table Mountain and stunning ocean views. Rich in culture, history, and renowned wine estates, it offers diverse tours and outdoor activities, from wine cellar tours to penguin kayaking. Alternatively, unwind on its famous white sand beaches with exceptional local wines.

The Garden Route

The Garden Route, tracing South Africa’s east coast along the Indian Ocean, commences at Mossel Bay, 400km from Cape Town. Most travelers begin from Cape Town, exploring the route. Known for pristine Plettenberg Bay beaches and Tsitsikamma National Park’s lush landscapes, the journey culminates in Port Elizabeth, featuring private game reserves for a splendid conclusion.

Drakensberg Mountains

The Garden Route, starting at Mossel Bay (400km from Cape Town) along South Africa’s east coast, is famous for Plettenberg Bay’s beautiful beaches and Tsitsikamma National Park’s lush scenery. It ends in Port Elizabeth, offering private game reserves as a wonderful conclusion.
