3 Days in Ubud, Bali

Any trip to Bali simply must spend time in Ubud. Once a small and very traditional village, then later considered the heart of Bali’s hippy scene, Ubud has now grown into one of Indonesia’s top destinations.

We’d recommend spending several days in situ to enjoy all a stay in Ubud has to offer. Our recommended 3 days Ubud itinerary is found below – but you could really spend a week or more here and not run out of things to see and do.

Introducing Ubud

The sprawling Balinese cultural capital Ubud has seen a surge in interest in recent years in part to the book and film ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, but its appeal hasn’t yet been spoiled, with tranquil temples, impressive Hindu architecture, and green rice terraces found around every corner.

These sit alongside trendy cafes and boutique shops selling the island’s famous craftsmanship and local artists’ works. There are plenty of museums and cultural performances to enjoy, particularly unique traditional Balinese dances.

Culture, History...and the Monkey Forest

Day 1

Today is a day for culture. Start your day with a visit to the Pura Tirta Empul, known for its holy spring water temple, at which you can join the locals in a purifying dip. You’ll then drive through scenery of lush rice terraces to Goa Gajah, a mysterious ‘elephant cave’ thought to date back to the 11th century.

Return to central Bali for an afternoon stroll through the Sacred Monkey Forest. Located right in the heart of town, it is perfect for a gentle introduction to Bali’s alluring temples and natural scenery.

Return to your hotel for a late afternoon Balinese massage, before dinner out in one of our favorite restaurants, accompanied by Balinese dance performances.

Mount Batur, Mountain-Biking, Rice Fields

Day 2

Today begins with a scenic drive around an hour north up to the volcanic slopes of Mount Batur. This will be your starting point for a thrilling downhill mountain bike run back to Ubud, passing through the gorgeous scenery of rice fields, forests, and picturesque villages along the way.

End the day at the beautiful Tegalalang rice terraces. The iconic terraces spill down the steep hillside and are ripe for late afternoon hiking and sunset photography. Don’t miss an opportunity to enjoy the ‘Bali swing’ which sweeps out thrillingly over the cascading scenery.

Tie up the loose ends!

Day 3

With so much on offer, today can be spent tying up any loose ends you feel you have missed. A Balinese cooking class comes highly recommended – giving you great memories, and skills you can take home with you!

For more adrenaline thrills, feel free to rent a scooter and explore the magnificent scenery all around Ubud. Dedicated hikers will enjoy the Campuhan Ridge Walk, the best known of Ubud’s many hiking trails.

Alternatively, kick back at your fine hotel, enjoy a massage, and indulge in great food!
